Do you mean the film? It's quite scary in place and also very emotional when the dad dies.

PaulaYatesbiggestfan · 20/12/2007 20:51

yes 30 year olds weep buckets but the babies dont seem to flinch

dontwanttogetoutofbed · 20/12/2007 20:51

i took my dd to see it when she was 3 - to be honest she was too young - its quite loud and there are bits when the lights are very low and she was too young to follow the story so didn't get anything out of it - we went for a grandparents birthday.

if you do go get a aisle seat so that you can make discreet exits when necessary - the ushers were very helpful to us and i don't think we destroyed anyone else's afternoon.

i suspect it depends on your 3 year old more than anything else

Mary Poppins recommended for older children I think.

ohcomeALYefaithful · 20/12/2007 21:02

I was going to say don't have an aisle seat in the stalls as all the animals race down the aisles at the start and can be quite frightening!

We took DD for her 4th birthday, she had been to many plays/performances of childrens (and adults) theatre so was used to the whole set up, including sitting still for the required time. I think that was just old enough.

Mary Poppins is for over 6's I would say, took DD for her 7th and she was freaked by the Playroom scene - it was very scary and unpleasant.

How about The Snowman at The Peacock theatre, DD did this aged 3 and loved it.

we went there. she did love it, she was mesmerized.

Mary poppins is quite long- I think they recommend at least 7 years old. TBH I wouldn't take a child this young to anything other than a Tweenies/ Noddy type show or a panto. Both my dds have been to pantos since they were 25

GrimmaTheNome · 20/12/2007 21:20

25 being the recommended age limit for the John Barrowman in Aladdin I presume ?

Sorry. thought escaped from t'other thread.

smartiejake · 20/12/2007 21:26

sorry I'm not really an overprotective mother! That should have said 2.5 (2 and a half)

newgirl · 20/12/2007 21:29

three def too long for lion king and mary poppins - gruffalo child or panto instead?

newgirl · 20/12/2007 21:30

sorry - three too YOUNG not too long - but they are too long for a youngster!!

sophy · 21/12/2007 19:43

I think 3 is too young for Lion King, we took DS's last year and just-5-yr-old found it a bit long and hard to follow.

islandofsodor · 26/12/2007 18:51

It is reccomended for children aged 7, but I will be taking several 6 year olds to see it.

Under 3's are not allowed into the theatre, so if your child looks borderline on age, take some ID

RudolphtherEDDASnosedreindeer · 26/12/2007 19:10

i took dd, just 3 to mary poppins but tbh I wouldn't go again. she loved it but got bored in places and it isn't the same as the film, so she was shouting(at me) but it's xxxx next mummy but she did love all the songs and was VERY VERY excited. but a bit too young with hindsight(tis a wonderful thing!)

maggiethecat · 27/12/2007 22:37

You'll be guided by your child - their personality, preferences, attention span etc. DD was 3 when we introduced her to Cinderella panto and the Snowman altho she had been accustomed to going to kids' (small scale) productions. When she was 3.5 she saw Lion King musical and was enthralled by it all altho heartbroken at Mufasa's death. It's a great production to see tho and if your child is not ready for it then you'll have reason to go again.

BigGitDad · 27/12/2007 22:43

Took DD (4.5 yrs) to Mary Poppins last week and she loved it (so did I!) I think she would like Lion King, though for a three year old I think they may be a bit young.
Mary Poppins ends soon (13th Jan) so you will have to book quick.
Taking both kids (son is 2.5 yrs) to Pater Pan tomorrow at our local theatre and that has Paul Micheal Glazier (from Starsky and Hutch) Looking forward to that.

DS 2.9 loves The Lion King DVD but we are going to wait a few more years to take him to the theatre. I have seen it twice, its magical and I want him to appreciate it a bit more. DD 4.5 saw Mary Poppins last week and loved it. She saw the Snowman last year at 3.5 and also loved that. They are all so different, and sometimes the older they get the more scared they get of things. Maybe next year DD would be more scared of Mary Poppins, who knows, its finishing so we will never find out! We are taking them both to see Peter Pan tomorrow so that will be DS first theatre trip. Really not sure how he will be, but if he fidgets or needs to go out then its up to DH cos I am just wetting myself with excitement to see Starsky as Captain Hook... CAN'T WAIT

Hello dear

BigGitDad · 27/12/2007 22:45

wondered where you were!

iwantacoolchristmasnickname · 27/12/2007 23:32

3 too young in my opinion, the whole show was more sophisticated and grown up than I had anticipated. My lot, older than yours, found it difficult to follow the story line.

Try something else this time...
