Last minute Christmas breaks - ideas please

We have booked a family holiday to Mexico at Christmas but I think we're going to change our dates for next year as there is too much uncertainty.

So we're thinking of a few shorter breaks over the Christmas period. We are a family of 5 - 2 adults dds (18 and 20) and a 14 year old dd. Dd hates city holidays/culture/walking etc and would really rather stay at home. So thinking of a couple of short trips for 2 or 3 of us so dd3 can stay at home.

I have no ideas really. Either UK or somewhere in Europe. Oldest dd is unvaccinated currently (severe phobia, we're dealing with it) so I'm guessing she would be limited to the UK?

We've been in recent years to Norfolk (north coast), New Forest, Bournemouth, Edinburgh and Liverpool.

Any suggestions please?

Yorkshire - towns and cities such as york harrogate and leeds as well as beautiful countryside?

For a Christmassy city break I think York, Oxford and Bath would all be on my list. You could also look at Scotland - somewhere like the Cairngorms where you’d get snow.

We’ve actually been to York, had a great time. I’d love to see more of Yorkshire though.

Any suggestions for Europe? Or would it not be sensible to travel now?

Well, France won't let you in. I can see more countries refusing travellers UK travellers. Is it worth the hassle?

bendmeoverbackwards · 16/12/2021 12:06

Where in Yorkshire would be a good base for exploring?

Agree with this. But that notwithstanding, I'd say Madrid, or if you want warm-ish weather the Canaries or southern Spain. The Baltic states will presumably be wintry and Christmassy, although I've not been to any.

If you want a market town, rather than a city base then Pateley Bridge is lovely. Has a couple of pubs / restaurants, easy access to Ripon and Harrogate, NT Fountains Abbey plus the Nidderdale Way for walking.

How about Leeds? You can get to York and Harrogate or even Manchester pretty easily
