Holidays
An in law gift
Hairyhat · 16/11/2021 21:28
Where would you choose to go if your in laws wanted to buy your 12 year old a holiday. Just the 2 of you (they don't want to come with us), mum and child.
They (my in laws) have recently come into some money and allocated various bits including investing in my child's trust fund and they now want to buy a "dream" holiday for them up to 4K (!).
I am not at all able to afford 4K holidays but very grateful to be given this amazing opportunity for my child.
We are not used to holidaying outside the uk but my child has been lucky enough to get on the primary ski courses in junior school and absolutely loved it. I can also ski so this would be an amazing opportunity but should the money be spent more wisely elsewhere?
Can you get 2 weeks skiing for 4K? It seems so expensive.
If anyone had any advice that would be brilliant thanks.
I don't think there is a timescale attached but I would love my child to have an amazing holiday to look forward to so booking soon might be an extra treat.

I've never skied in my life but just wanted to say that's a wonderful gift @hairyhat! Wherever you go you'll both remember it for the rest of your lives
deleteasappropriate · 16/11/2021 21:51
You should have gone into AIBU though! Strapline AIBU to not know where to go for a paid fir holiday
Hairyhat · 16/11/2021 21:51
Thanks. I think the same so I'm worried about wasting the money!
So lucky though

Well I've just found this for Poland (I love Poland!) addventuretours.co.uk/february-half-term-ski-holiday-2022/?gclid=Cj0KCQiAys2MBhDOARIsAFf1D1dxPP4o2-923yOIK-vc-f8PuKYhVzAlSkp45zf58rs5iTZ0pkvAax8aArd-EALw_wcB

Is this with your DP (their child?) as well?
I hate skiing so wouldn’t fancy that at all, but if you all love it, then do that. What does your DD enjoy?

This might be useful too (although it's a bit old!).
Hairyhat · 16/11/2021 22:46
@Howshouldibehave I don't have a DP and sadly my child's father died so it would just be the 2 of us.
Hairyhat · 16/11/2021 22:47
@deleteasappropriate oh wow those polish skiing deals look amazing!
Thanks so much for the link

I've heard that Colletts is good - they're in the Italian Dolomites, or we had a super trip with Simply Morzine.
I'd probably recommend looking at Feb 2023 at this stage as all the really good stuff for Feb half term will be booked up already and there's still a bit of uncertainty with covid. Or you'd get a lot more for your money at Easter, depending on when it falls. We went to Montgenevre at Easter and the snow and skiing was still amazing. Again I'm not sure how much is still available for next year.
Aristodog · 17/11/2021 20:50
No advice about skiing, but have you spoken to your DC about where they’d like to go? With that sort of money you could pretty much go anywhere with careful planning, and I know at that age I’d have appreciated being involved in the planning almost as much as the holiday itself.
Hairyhat · 17/11/2021 21:02
Yes. They want to ski. They also want to visit Italy. We are not usually able to just choose hence me asking for advice
TizerorFizz · 18/11/2021 16:47
At that age we took DC skiing to Austria and Switzerland snd Canada. I do think skiing can be an issue if you don’t go every year. We carried on going!
You could look at Italy but you are presumably restricted to half term or maybe just after Christmas. So seeing anything besides a mountain resort isn’t easy to include.
To help I would strongly suggest having an airport to resort transfer of no more than 2 hours. Choose a holiday company where there might be other DC. Factor in lift passes. Hugely expensive now! I would suggest Powder Byrne but they a mega bucks! You might find something though. You’ll definitely find other children!
Hairyhat · 18/11/2021 17:03
Thanks @TizerorFizz good advice. Skiing every year might be a bit beyond us but dc can ski ok due to school trip and having relatives in a ski resort (not Europe)
rookiemere · 18/11/2021 18:19
Actually I've just reread your OP. I think the simple answer is no you couldn't do two weeks in the school holidays for £4k if you're also including ski hire, lift passes and possibly some lessons, unless you do something like self drive and rent a s/c apartment, but then it's a lot of hassle and you'll need to rent bed linen etc. etc. As it's just the two of you I'd want to keep it straightforward through a holiday.
A week on that budget should be doable, but demand after two spoiled ski seasons is very high for 2022.
