how long does it take after having Covid for test to show negative for travelling

we are meant to be going to Denmark for a family celebration on the 15th - DD's LFT has come up positive tonight- I imagine that she would have had covid from Saturday (although her LFT's were showing negative each time she felt like she was getting a cold) - would she have any chance of getting a negative PCR before we fly on the 15th?

clutching at straws here

Well the next step is to take a PCR asap. For all you know, that might come back negative and you have nothing to worry about.

iwantavuvezela · 05/10/2021 22:17

I thought that if a LFT was positive that was it? (definitely positive) - okay can do that - but I think with the symptoms (mild cold / headache) its probably covid - DD has been at home since sat thinking she had a cold, all other LFT's from Sat showed negative, - she has been at home and was thinking of going to school tomorrow - so did another LFT and that came back positive!

LFTs are only 50% accurate. When you logged the positive LFT test on the NHS app, it should have told you to do a PCR test asap.

Coronado2 · 05/10/2021 22:22

You definitely need to do a PCR.

I would be very doubtful a trip on the 15th would be going ahead. Are you not worried someone else in the house will catch it from her?

alphabetspagetti · 05/10/2021 22:26

I agree that she should get a PCR. If that is positive then, as she did an asymptomatic test today and that was positive, then day 0 is today so she will still be self isolating on 15th. Her self isolation period won't end until midnight on 15th October (going into the 16th). So she can't travel on 15th anyway.
Or do you mean November?

milkysmum · 05/10/2021 22:27

You definitely a PCR. It's really impossible to say though whether she'll have a negative or positive result by the 15th- it does vary so much honestly. Plus someone else quite likely to get covid within household also so have that to contend with also. Friends ds tested positive on the fit to fly PCR though after having covid the month previous and they told them to go home and try again next day! Next day it was negative and they moved to another flight.

Mammaaof · 05/10/2021 22:28

You need a PCR test now and also if she is positive, someone else in the household could catch it and be positive when your due to go anyway.

No, the false positive rate of lfts is really, really low. With symptoms and a positive result, the OP's dd almost certainly has covid.

10 days isolation starts from when symptoms started, so she should be out by the 15th, but she may still be testing positive by then. I had one on day 12 (for a research study) and it was positive.

thanks for that everyone - I think I know that the trip is not going ahead - its a heart thing - we lost my dh/ dd's father (not covid related but to cancer) earlier this year - this trip was planned to meet up with his family and see them as we haven't seen them due to covid travel restrictions since he died ....

Sorry for your loss.

Is there any way to reschedule the trip for a few weeks?

LadyGAgain · 05/10/2021 22:38

You can have a positive PCR up to 12 weeks after so the travel rules are different.

IsabellesMissingSock · 06/10/2021 04:25

I had a positive PCR on July 21st. I subsequently did a return-from-holiday Day 2 PCR on around 2 Sept which was negative. I have several friends who experienced similar. Everyone is different, but I've seen it on here that most people go back to testing negative within 3 weeks. Can be up to 90 days worst case scenario (but it's very unlikely to be as long as that).

Silkieschickens · 06/10/2021 04:42

I would have thought her isolation period from PCR might go up to 15th but depends when symptoms started. Check the rules for Denmark, I believe with France (though could be wrong) if you have tested positive and had covid and done isolation in last 6 months you get an exemption from entry test. Otherwise probably around 50-50 for testing positive on pcr around 14th, can last up to 90 days but its rare.

Silkieschickens · 06/10/2021 04:43

The other risk is you can also catch it from her for up to first 11 days from symptoms - we had ours start on 2nd September and been going round the family.

iwantavuvezela · 06/10/2021 16:46

thanks for everyones' input - I think as its a weekend away - I might do a test (Denmark accepts an antigen test) on DD 24 hours before we are supposed to leave (and if we are both then in the clear we will fly - and if not, then we stay - she will theoretically be out of quarantine so its a chance we take - but we can do some LFT's a few days before we fly which should give us an indication how its going!.
I booked my tickets with insurance so that's refundable, and I need to give the hotel 24 hours notice -
I also took at PCR today just to make sure I am not brewing somethings well ....
