What happens if you test positive abroad?!
PileOfBooks · 17/09/2021 00:20
I don't know many people who have travelled since the pandemic and we are hoping to go to Paris at some point (and disneyland..!)
What happens if people who travel abroad fine then test positive abroad? I haven't seen much about this but it is the thing most putting me off!
Presumably they wouldnt want us to stay at Disney - are there special covid hotels? What happens if you become quite ill? Does all normal travel insurance cover all this now?!
Geamhradh · 17/09/2021 07:07
It depends on your travel insurance but most offer Covid cover, read carefully as some only cover the person with Covid, not fellow travellers.
Covid hotel policy also depends on individual countries- not sure what France does. It should say on the French govt website. There's also a useful website called something like Schengen travel.
PileOfBooks · 17/09/2021 07:14
Thanks! I think where I am so anxious I am just amazed so many people are travelling amd not worried about it!
Geamhradh · 17/09/2021 07:14
Oh I'm the same!
I planned so many holidays abroad this summer then didn't go!
Geamhradh · 17/09/2021 07:15
There's also a really good Facebook group I follow- called Covid 19 help and travel or sth. I'll get the link.
PileOfBooks · 17/09/2021 07:24
Surely its somerhing most travellers have as part of their planning? I just assumed people had this sorted somehow?
So people stay in special hotels?
PileOfBooks · 17/09/2021 07:25
I am keen to hear what people who went on holiday this summer did/planned.
Skyeheather · 17/09/2021 07:28
There are "Quarantine Hotels". You will be escorted to one where you won't be allowed to leave your room for the quarantine period. Food will be delivered to your room three times a day. It won't be the nice food you enjoyed on holiday.
mynameiscalypso · 17/09/2021 07:32
@PileOfBooks
Surely it depends on the type of holiday? We were away for three weeks in France but we were self-catering and had our own pool so apart from the odd trip to the supermarket, we didn't see anyone. The chances of picking up Covid were so small that we didn't worry about it at all.
PileOfBooks · 17/09/2021 07:32
Thatswhat I assumed tbh. Is that the same if people test positive here that visit?
Surely with all the mumsnetters travelling and the covid rates this has happened to someone!?
PileOfBooks · 17/09/2021 07:34
People who "only go to the supermarket" can catch covid as we see over here. Similarly flights/ferries etc.
I'm not too worried about catching it as such as isolating!
Squirrelblanket · 17/09/2021 08:54
It differs by country. I'm on holiday in Greece now. In Greece, you would be taken to a separate quarantine hotel for isolation and this is paid for by the Greek government. Most insurance policies pay you a 'daily rate' for the isolation period which you can claim when you get home. However as another person said you need to check exactly what and who your policy covers, some only cover the person who tests positive although sometimes the whole party is asked to isolate. You would then need to arrange your own flight home and pay for it (unless you are on a package, they will probably do this for you). If you pay for it, you can probably claim this from your insurance but again, check this.
In some countries such as Portugal, you have to pay for the quarantine hotel. So check what the arrangement is in France before you decide.

It varies in every country OP, but I think most people go and just hope for the best/are very careful not to go to crowded places while away. We went abroad this summer and you only have to take a lateral flow test to return (and that is due to change today, if the rumours in the press are to be believed). We did a self test in our apartment, so what we did with those results was up to us.
StCharlotte · 17/09/2021 09:00
@PileOfBooks
This was one of the main reasons we haven't been abroad this year.
Aposterhasnoname · 17/09/2021 09:06
We got insurance with jet 2 that covered us for every covid eventuality. We weren’t worried about catching it. Both double jabbed, worked throughout the pandemic with few protective measures in the early days and didn’t catch it, so why would we catch it in a country with lower incidence, and when we spent all our tome other than sleeping, outside.
It’ll be even better if the reports are true and pre departure tests are being scrapped.

Well, not really. I don't know many (if any) people who have caught it from a quick trip to the supermarket - you're far more likely to catch it at school / public transport / office / at someone's house. If you're not doing any of that, you're at a much lower risk.
