Where to stop between Brittany and Annecy?

We're planning on driving to Annecy next August and want to stop somewhere between Brittany ferry port and Annecy. Planning on two nights to make life more relaxing. Was thinking Bourges but would Tours be more interesting for a day trip?

Where is “Brittany ferry port”? Can you be more specific which port you are coming from?

HelplessProcrastinator · 12/09/2021 20:56

Roscoff probably. I didn't think the exact port would make a massive difference to the route.

Roscoff is a bit further that’s all so I was thinking about time of crossing, how far you are happy to drive along with a long crossing on the first day.
Both are lovely places to visit - Tours is definitely bigger with more to see as you say - but I have not used either as a stopover. The main thing I have found with a stopover location. depends if you are travelling light or if you have big car, roofbox etc, then ideally you want somewhere just off the autoroute where you don’t have to worry about unpacking the entire car or height restrictions on the parking lot etc. In my experience at least!
Annecy is beautiful, have driven by many times but never stopped sadly!

Would be overnight ferry. In a 1989 VW van which goes pretty well but we are hoping for a more relaxed journey so 5-6 hours from ferry port. We'll have bikes with us so secure parking needed. Best solution would be out of town hotel with pool with taxi or bus option. We've done our fair share of trying to park in foreign cities so planning on making life easy this time.

That's a mammoth drive in a camper.

We did a tour over the summer and stayed at the Chateau de Perreux near Amboise. amazing, partially troglogdyte. We've also stayed at the Chateau de la Bordesiere which is in Montlouis sur Loire

We did Birmingham to Annecy a few times when I was a kid, though I think we crossed via Calais. Always stopped at or around Reims.

underneaththeash I’ll check out your suggestions thanks. Not sure about the mammoth drive. Van easily does 70mph on the motorway. It’s not an old bay van.

2tired2bewitty We’re coming from the West, not the North so Reims no good for us, thanks anyway.

I’ve just route mapped it, and it appears that the quickest journey is up the A11 towards Paris and then down the M6. If that’s the case, then I’d definitely recommend a stop at Fontainebleau.

If you stopped at Tours, that would leave a long drive to Annecy. There is a nice looking town on the Cher called Vierzon, which is the halfway point on the Tours, Bourges route. Bourges definitely has a lot more to see.
