Watching with interest. Really want to book to go to Rome soon but don't want to go too soon.

You need a “green pass” (covid passport) for most places
Masks worn much more than UK including some outside places

FusionChefGeoff · 11/09/2021 22:48

@minipie will an NHS COVID pass be accepted?? Or is there something else we need to get a green pass?

From the gov.uk website/

Travel in Italy
A “green pass”, also known as an EU digital COVID certificate, is required to travel on flights, high speed and intercity trains, ferries and coaches linking more than 2 regions.

A UK vaccination record or proof of having recovered from COVID will be accepted as a green pass however this must be in the form of a verifiable digital QR code.

Unvaccinated travellers can obtain a green pass, valid for 48 hours, after testing negative to a rapid COVID-19 test readily available from local pharmacies. Unvaccinated passengers flying to the UK must obtain a green pass no earlier than 48 hours prior to their flight departure.

Children under the age of 12 are exempt from presenting a green pass for domestic events and activities.

September/October is a lovely time to visit Rome but you need to book the major sites in advance, so Colosseum, Vatican, Villa Borghese is only Wednesdays IIRC. I’ll link you to a recent thread which will give you plenty of information.
If you’re double vaccinated and can prove it you’ll have no problems entering museums or indoor restaurants. Masks in shops and public buildings.

Don't you have to quarantine for. 5 days on arrival in Italy?

FusionChefGeoff · 11/09/2021 23:20

They changed it on 31st Aug so no quarantine if fully vaxxed

Here are the Italian Government rules for people arriving from the UK and other countries.

I was in Rome about 3 weeks ago.

It was fabulous. Lots of tourists but mainly French and German (who drive down) Spanish and Americans, as it was just a couple of days before the 5 day quaratine for Brits ended. Definitely however, not as many tourists as there would usually be in August. So queues weren't so bad (for example it only took us about 10 minutes to get into Saint Peter's where we happened upon a cardinal's funeral which was cool (not for him I suppose!)

Obviously you need a Green Pass for lots of things: restaurants if you want to eat indoors, museums, intercity trains etc as pp says above. If you don't have a pass (if you have unvaccinated kids for example) it's really easy to get a quick LFT - there are pop up tents outside pharmacies and on street corners.

We booked in advance: Vatican Museum, Pantheon, Colosseum. Longest queue without a doubt was Pantheon (pre booking tickets doesn't give you priority entrance there)

Everything is very well organized and I felt very safe. Lots of security around as ever in a major capital city.

Mask wearing is obligatory inside and where SD can't be managed (around Trevi fountain for example) and it is enforced. Around the fountain for example we noticed the guards moving round reminding people to put their masks on correctly.
