Any term holiday recommendations in Yorkshire?
Molly1418 · 11/09/2021 11:51
with a 16 year old and a small dog?
TIA

It’s 4 large counties, with everything from deep rural to vibrant city, you’re going to need to give a bit more detail. You’ll definitely need a raincoat though.

I am thinking to be based in York city and going to seaside towns daily we will stay there for four nights. Or would you say better to stay in caravan parks nearby seaside and go to city and other places from there? Thanks
Molly1418 · 11/09/2021 12:16
@BikeRunSki we were in Devon in July, literally rained every day!!
cheeseismydownfall · 11/09/2021 12:19
We stayed in Robin Hood's Bay this summer which was lovely, although probably a but quiet for a teen. Lots of people on here rave about Whitby but I thought it was an absolute dump.
Personally I think York is too far from the coast for daily trips if what you are looking for is a predominantly beach holiday. You could do one day trip though as part of a shirt city break.
PeonyTime · 11/09/2021 12:20
What about 2 nights in somewhere like Bridlington or Scarborough, and then 2 nights in York? Probably better than doing the journey every day?
katie2812 · 11/09/2021 12:20
I recommend crowes nest caravan park. Good facilities. Near a circus and easy to get bus to places
Molly1418 · 11/09/2021 12:23
@cheeseismydownfall thanks, I am so undecided I don't want to spend our precious 4 days in and around dump areas. My other option is South Wales, near Gover peninsula - not sure.
Molly1418 · 11/09/2021 12:25
@PeonyTime thank you, in fact it is a great idea, will look into this option now
cheeseismydownfall · 11/09/2021 12:26
Could you tell us a bit more about what you would like to do? I'm guessing with a 16 year old, a trip to the beach doesn't mean playing in the sand. So are you thinking more coastal walking? Walking in general? Pottering round towns? Museums? Eating out?
Molly1418 · 11/09/2021 12:34
@cheeseismydownfall yes exactly that wandering around towns, galleries, buzzing places - coastal, it is just nice to be by the seaside
Babymamamama · 11/09/2021 12:35
We loved walking round the Roman walls at the perimeter of York, visiting Jorvik exhibition, visiting York Dungeons, getting take away cakes from Bettys tea rooms, boating down the river, hanging out in Museum Gardens, yummy Italian ice creams from the little shop near Monks Gate. York is wonderful! I will be back to Yorkshire another time to venture further afield but cannot recommend York highly enough. And DD likes it too and she’s a tough audience! The designer outlet is also great for teen shopping with Doc Martyn outlet. And such friendly locals (and we are southerners and didn’t expect this so it was a fab bonus). I will return….
Molly1418 · 11/09/2021 12:36
that's why I thought maybe be based in York centre and go around from there
Molly1418 · 11/09/2021 12:38
@Babymamamama thank you so much, what you had done is exactly what I have been looking for! Brilliant, thanks for all recommendations, sounds lovely
Babymamamama · 11/09/2021 12:46
We did air bnb just outside the city walls. Once we parked up I didn’t drive again until we left except one trip to the designer outlet. We did 4 nights. But still didn’t manage to do everything I wanted. Due to good weather (great blessing) we didn’t do any museums of which there a plenty or even go inside the cathedral. So they are still on the bucket list for another time. . Also saw so many lovely restaurants in our wandering but we didn’t manage to do everything. Oh and the Shambles with its Harry Potter links is great fun too.
cheeseismydownfall · 11/09/2021 12:48
It sounds like York would be a great choice for you then. We had a lovely short break there this year and its really walkable with lots to explore. A few ideas -
I booked a walking tour with a local historian on a bit of a whim and it was brilliant. Highly recommend. www.viator.com/en-GB/tours/York/Best-of-York-on-Foot/d5446-180288P1
- climbing the tower at the Minster is hard work but rewarding! You'll need to book in advance.
- the Shambles is great for Harry Potter fans
- National Railway Museum is free and an interesting couple of hours
- we found an amazing donut shop! Will post a link. And a great sweetshop too.
Molly1418 · 11/09/2021 12:53
@cheeseismydownfall thanks a lot, will check the link now. Yes, sounds like I found my answer :)
BikeRunSki · 11/09/2021 12:57
York to Scarborough or Whitby is a good hour + by road. Probs nearer 1.5 hours. 2 nights by the coast and 2 nights in York sounds like a good combination.
Starisnotanumber · 11/09/2021 13:04
Just a point what are you going to do with the small dog who won't be allowed into many of the attractions or shops you are considering.
Molly1418 · 11/09/2021 13:07
@Starisnotanumber ahhh really??? we usually do things in turns but of course not always possible! something I need to think!
Starisnotanumber · 11/09/2021 13:29
It may be that small dog 🐕 has to go on their own holiday if you are planning York City break.
From memory won't be allowed into the Minster Yorvik most shops the Railway Museum and lots of cafes.
You will also have a much reduced choice of accommodation as most hotels and many rented properties won't allow animals to stay.
Georgyporky · 11/09/2021 18:59
We went to York recently, & 4 days was not enough time.
We'd also been to Whitby. Didn't like it. Very little to do without driving to somewhere else, & the place stank of fish&chips all day long.
