Best place for reasonable weather Jan/Feb

Assuming that travel is allowed, where are the best places for a bit of winter sun? (doesn't have to be beach weather - just bright and cheering!)

I'm not a skier and have been trying not to fly too much anymore because of environmental reasons mostly, but I haven't been on a plane with since 2019 so I figure by Jan/Feb 2022 I can justify it.

My favourite places outside of Europe are/were 1. Japan 2. USA 3. South Africa 4. Mexico - none of which are looking easy atm for travel but would love some suggestions - are the Greece islands or Turkey worth going to at that time of year? I have been to both of those places and really enjoyed it, plus it's my favourite food!
Anywhere else good that time of year?

DH and I went to the Maldives in January 2020, just as Covid was kicking off (thankfully at the time we were oblivious to the extent that it would change the world) it was amazing but long flights, I’d definitely go back though

Barbados is wonderful.

Sunbird24 · 08/09/2021 00:46

Second Barbados, it’s one of only a couple of places I’ve been to more than once, both times in January

ShuddaBeenMe · 08/09/2021 00:56

Greece and Turkey will be brighter than here but likely rainy

middlingmess · 08/09/2021 12:44

I've been to the Caribbean before, and I didn't really like itBlush is Barbados really that great?

Dubai although you can get some hazy days where the sun doesn't seem to break through

loopylindi · 08/09/2021 13:04

depends what you like doing and how old you are. We've loved Madeira foe several years. It has a wonderful balmy climate most of the year, stunning scenery, not much in the way of beaches (which has an effect on the type of people who go there) January is better than Feb as it tends to rain more in Feb. Christmas and NYEve are brilliant if you can get there then for the street vibe and fireworks on NY eve. Best of all it's not too far to fly.

The Middle East, the Caribbean or South Africa (hopefully it’ll be off the red list by then).

LetItBe80 · 18/09/2021 00:51

Barbados is fabulous in Jan/Feb

If you just want T-shirt weather during the day and a generally, reliably mild climate all the time - I've loved Spain for many January breaks. For the best weather, look at the southeast, around Málaga, Granada, Ronda - for some reason that corner seems to get the most hours of sun and fewest of rain of all of mainland Europe in the winter. Maybe even north along the east coast to Alicante and Valencia. But I've also loved Sevilla, Cádiz, and Córdoba - still southish, but further west - in January too.

For Greece, I'd be careful of the islands only because many things may be closed. I'd look at Crete, maybe, or mainland Greece may be a better option. Or Cyprus?

Malta's also a nice warm-but-not-beachy temperature, but expect about 1/3 of your days to be rainy, and often accompanied by high winds!

I was in western Turkey a few years ago for the whole month of March, and it was a mix - some days hot all day, some soooo cold!

Caribbean's ideal for the temperature, a medium-length flight, and OKish for COVID (although I think things are declining in general in the region) but if you disliked other places you may not love Barbados - maybe we can advise better if you tell what you disliked?

As an outside choice (long flight), I loved Cambodia in late February/early March. There's a high season which is nice but hectic and expensive; if you get in on either side of it, it can be a very relaxing trip.

Thanks for the replies, I've only been to Cuba in the Caribbean and didn't really rate it - this could be because it was over hyped to me, I also don't speak Spanish and the food....my goodness the food!!! Grin

I'm willing to try another island, or possibly the Cancun area in Mexico?
