Jersey - things to do/places to eat

Hello - I am travelling to Jersey next weekend with my family (5 adults and my son, aged 6). We are staying at the Merton hotel which was primarily chosen for my son due to the pool complex and family entertainment.

Can anyone recommend things to do in Jersey that we may enjoy as a family.

Also any recommendations for meals (particularly outdoor venues) would be great. Both for the whole family and special place for date night.

We are there for a week and as both my son and I are recovering from Covid, it literally can’t come soon enough so we plan on spoiling ourselves with lots of nice days/meals out.

Thanks!

Water sports at some of the beaches (e.g. Le Braye)

  • surf and SUP hire or lessons

Jersey Zoo

  • this isn’t the sort of zoo that makes you feel too uncomfortable 😣 . It’s managed by the Durrell Wildlife Conservation group who do a lot of good conservation work across the world. The café is also good for cake 🍰 ☺️

Jersey War Tunnels

  • Haven’t been but it has come highly recommended!

St Aubins

  • nice harbour to walk around and lots of choices for bars, cafes and restaurants.

Gorey

  • the castle, beach and waterside drinks or lunch

Portelet Bay

  • windy wee path down onto the beach and a great pizza place right on the water
  • I think you might be able to get over to the island with Janvrin’s tomb at low tide… but definitely double check that fact and don’t take my word for it!
-Old Smugglers Inn

St Ouen/ Le Braye

  • super long beach with water sports
-El Tico, surfy Mexican(ish) restaurant with things like pizza, salads, nachos, sharing boards etc looking out over the beach

St Helier
-Main town.. it’s ok.
-Thai Dicq, no frills Thai shack right on the water. Worth a visit!

La Corbiere

  • pretty village, lighthouse

Date night dinner

  • you are not short of lovely (and sometimes expensive!) places
  • Longueville Manor (although I like Sunday lunch here)
  • Oyster Box
  • Café Spice (an unusual addition but it is very nice Indian food!)
  • Mark Jordan
… the list goes on. I’ve definitely missed some. You won’t be short of places to go for a lovely dinner date.

If you’ve got a car, just take it slowly and aim to explore most of the island ☀️ 🌊 🥂🏄🏼‍♀️🍽

The pool at the Merton is amazing - enjoy!!

Green Island beach is our favourite beach for a day on the beach, but st ouens is amazing for the huge waves - I wouldn't feel comfortable having dc there all day because of the strings currents etc but fun to watch the huge breakers.

Tamba Park is a great soft play/dinosaur Park. It's a really lovely soft play, very wooden and natural as opposed to bright and plastic

Would echo Jersey zoo which is really.focussed.kn conservation

Amazin is also a good day out

LifeOfBriony · 19/08/2021 21:56

I would add to that list Elizabeth Castle; you can walk out to it via a causeway at low tide, or go by amphibious vehicle. There's a lot to see there.

We really enjoyed Jersey Lavender. It's a great place to visit, has a lovely cafe and when we went had some chickens you could feed.

Needcoffeecoffeecoffee · 19/08/2021 22:05

Jersey zoo definitely its lovely and really cares for the animals
The dc loved amazin adventure park (the other adults may not so much its all outdoors and lots of fun but perhaps you could split the party in 2 and the another adults do something your son wouldnt enjoy )
Have a good trip it sounds like it's well needed

Fab suggestions - thanks so much all! Checking them all out now. We are toying with hiring a car for a couple of days to give us maximum flexibility!

Greve de Lecq beach is amazing. I would say a car is a very good idea.

Datsandcogs · 19/08/2021 22:24

I’d add the Land train from St Helier to St Aubin’s. Ice cream at St Catherine’s breakwater. Also a seafari - there are several different companies offering a variety of trips, these need booking ASAP.

I’ve heard great things about the pool at the Merton, but the Aquasplash pool is also great, wave machine, flumes, lazy river.

For your 6 year old, definitely Durrells, Amazin Maze and Tamba Park. The war tunnels are informative but spooky to a little one, there’s a lot of reading, unless very interested in WWII I don’t think it’s particularly suitable.

Oh, favourite beach is St Brelade’s. Before you hire a car check the bus routes, the timetable is usually very accommodating in the summer.

LilyGlobe · 19/08/2021 22:30

Jersey Zoo is a must visit.
St Brelade’s Beach is stunning and there are nice restaurants there.
We always visit Jersey Pearl, it’s become a tradition now Grin
Amaizin adventure park was a hit with DS too

My dds absolute favourite holiday was at the Merton! My eldest was on the flow rider daily. I think she was 8 when we went.

We used the buses to get everywhere. We got a pass from the main ticket office/bus depot in St Helier. Personally I wouldn't have wanted to drive around having seen the buses go round the little lanes!

The zoo is a definite trip you have to do. We also loved the castle Mount Orgueil. There is a little country/farm park the 6 year old would love. A maize maze etc.
There is a park at the bottom of the rd next to the Merton. There was an outdoor cinema running weekly. It was lovely (and free-you could make a donation at the end) and definitely an unusual way to spend our last evening. But wrap up really warm. One local.family brought a sofa down to the park!
Have a lovely time Smile

user1471530109 · 19/08/2021 22:39

Ah.. farm park was amaizn park as everyone else has said

Yes, St Brelades beach is lovely. I left my bank card in a shop and didn't realise until we got back to hotel. Rushed back on the bus several hours later and the shop owner had kept is safe for me Blush

user1471530109 · 19/08/2021 22:41

Just to add, Mount Orgueil was fab for the kids. They had dressing up clothes (which they were allowed to stay in for whole visit-probably not with covid now Sad) and lots of activities for them too.

sunnyday1976 · 19/08/2021 22:47

We stayed at the Merton a few years ago and ate at a Thai literally on the beach close by. It was great.
