We are in Lilleshall near Telford - and need ideas for a bored 15 year old boy. Doesnot do roller coasters but into computers, drama, will go for a walk and quite good on a castle / historic house.

Thank you in advance

How far are you prepared to travel? Powis Castle just over the border is a lovely day out. Or Cadbury World?

321zyx · 16/08/2021 21:54

RAF Cosford Museum

Magpiecomplex · 16/08/2021 21:55

Cosford was my immediate thought too. Also Ironbridge.

321zyx · 16/08/2021 21:57

Wroxeter Roman site

321zyx · 16/08/2021 21:58

Iron Bridge

Finzi · 16/08/2021 21:58

Wroxeter Roman City? It’s an amazing site, and there is a villa there that was built a few years ago as part of a project, built using the techniques the Romans would have used, which is an interesting addition.

Up the road from you in Newport, Shropshire!👋🏻

If he's good with historic houses, etc. then I'd cane the arse out of a family National Trust membership. Lots of special events on at NT properties particularly during the summer months. Attingham Park at Atcham and Sunnycroft at Wellington often have nice things going on in the school holidays.

Also ice skating at Telford Ice Rink might be worth a punt? You get a discount if you are a Telford & Wrekin resident, I believe.

Also came on to say RAF Cosford. A fantastic day out and (last time we went) not stupidly expensive either. If he likes history, he might enjoy Blists Hill.

SerenShine · 16/08/2021 22:04

Wolverhampton have a really good art gallery, currently has a lego type exhibition and a pop art exhibition. It's free to get in and their cafe is superb. I highly recommend the samosa platter.

The Cold War exhibition at RAF Cosford is brilliant.

Enginuity in Ironbridge is really interesting.

whiteroseredrose · 16/08/2021 22:05

There is Lilleshall Abbey which looks interesting for a walk.

You could walk up the Wrekin near Telford for great views.

You are about 20 mins from Ironbridge. There is the Gorge for a walk, Blists Hill Victorian Town and a steam train. Not been there yet but it is on my list!

There is the National Trust Benthall Hall.

mynamesnotsam · 16/08/2021 22:05

Not sure how far you want to travel. There's a lovely walk up Stiperstones and an excellent little visitor centre serving drinks and cake on the other side of Shrewsbury. Shrewsbury has a climbing centre and you can book to do the escape room at Shrewsbury Prison. You can canoe on the River Severn from Ironbridge. Blists Hill Victorian Town is interesting, although he may be a bit old for it at 15. There's a castle a Ludlow and an air museum at Cosford.

Winifredgoose · 16/08/2021 22:08

I have just arrived back from Shropshire today. My children really enjoyed a walk at Carding Mill valley. There were different routes to choose from and we looped back and ended up at a beautiful reservoir you can swim in. It was v fun...and cold.
Also stiperstones, though this is a little further away from Telford.
My children really enjoyed going to Blists Hill and then seeing the Iron Bridge, though they are younger. I saw people canoeing down the Severn under the bridge, which a teen may find fun??
Would he enjoy horse riding. I started looking and their seemed loads of places, but we were out of time.
There is Ludlow Castle and the Severn Steam rail, though we didn't do either.
We did go to Attingham Park near Shrewsbury, but the house was a bit of a let down other than the playground and grounds.
Sorry, these are my only suggestions!

senua · 16/08/2021 22:09

Haven't been for years but Hawkstone Park is/was quirky, a bit different from your standard "walk or castle / historic house".

senua · 16/08/2021 22:14

You can do a combined canoe and rail trip. Canoe downstream (less work!) and return on the SVR. CanoeUK

WilloTheCrisp · 16/08/2021 22:14

My teen absolutely loved Shrewsbury Prison. We just wandered round ourselves but you can do a guided tour with one of the former guards or an escape room type challenge in a cell.

Really interesting place and quite chilling!

Thank you all so much. Fabulous ideas and will put them into action.

Telford - ice rink, Sky Reach high ropes course & climbing wall, Inflatanation indoor inflatable course, Airea51 indoor trampoline centre, ten pin bowling
Alderford Lake (outside Whitchurch) - inflatable assault course on the lake, paddle board hire etc
Ironbridge - kayak/canoe/raft hire via Shropshire Raft Tours
Shrewsbury - ‘climb the walls’, prison
Various cycling trails (can hire a bike via Telford Town Park)
Various National Trust places
Seven Valley Railway
Hope this helps

trickofthetail1 · 16/08/2021 22:26

Hawkestone Park Follies is not too far from you and might be a possibility.

Ginandtonic4all · 17/08/2021 20:41
