Can priority boarding bags be checked in?

Hi, flying with Ryanair and have priority boarding. Some liquids I need to take are bigger than 100ml. Does anyone know if they'll let me check the bag rather than carry on and if they charge extra? I've been waiting for 40 min in the queue for online chat with them to ask and then lost the bloody connection!

Can you decant them?
If they’re medicines then the 100ml rule often doesn’t apply.

spongedod · 12/08/2021 12:56

Yes what are the liquids?

You can add a checked bag if you go online to your booking. Yes you have to pay for it.

ryanbloodyair · 12/08/2021 12:57

No it's a group going with kids, have one checked case to share but it's too heavy so want to split the sun creams and shampoos etc across the 10kg bags and check them

OP posts:
eurochick · 12/08/2021 12:58

You can add a checked bag. They will charge unless a checked bag is already included in your booking.

ryanbloodyair · 12/08/2021 12:58

Booked through a third party agency who booked priority

they'll let you check it but will charge you to do so, I think the airport cost for a bag is about £50/€60

If you get through on chat you may be lucky and have them upgrade your bag, or at least pay the difference, without the 'at airport' price increase. Their chat is far easier to access on a laptop (and less likely to crash).

spongedod · 12/08/2021 12:58

I would just buy them when you get there. It will be cheaper then checking another bag.

Pissinthepottyplease · 12/08/2021 12:59

Can’t you just buy it airside? It’s fine to take large amount of liquid on the plane as long as it’s been bought airside.

spongedod · 12/08/2021 12:59

It's cheaper to add another checked bag yourself then waiting until the airport or even calling g and it's clear on the website the call centre option costs more.

Tibtab · 12/08/2021 13:01

It would be cheaper to buy suncream etc airside than the £50ish cost to check the bag in. I

namechange30455 · 12/08/2021 13:03

You'll have to pay for another case/pay for the one case being overweight, or buy the toiletries airside.

EileenGC · 12/08/2021 13:06

Buy the liquids airside, or add a checked bag now through your online booking. You can go to manage my booking -> add luggage, or something like that. It will be much more expensive at the airport.

SnarkyBag · 12/08/2021 13:06

Yes you’ll be charged. Buy that stuff air side

Chewbecca · 12/08/2021 13:09

Basically you want to check another bag in?

If so, that will need to be paid for.

BarbaraofSeville · 12/08/2021 13:10

Can you put your liquids in the checked case and the put other (non liquid) stuff in the carry on so that all the weights are under the limits? Shoes or other heavy things?

Do you have enough weight allowance if you swap things round like this or are you still short? It's probably worth taking sun cream with you as it's expensive abroad and not all UK airports have a decent airside pharmacy, and it's often expensive there anyway, but if you're short on weight, I'd ditch shampoo (or shower gel etc) and buy that abroad, because you can just get a cheap supermarket one for a euro and share that.

PeonyTime · 12/08/2021 13:12

Can you order thr shampoo and suncream for boots outside collection at the airport?
Or take something else out of the checked in bag to reduce weight rather than thr liquids?

BarbaraofSeville · 12/08/2021 13:14

Never book Ryanair via a third party if you can avoid it. It can cause all sorts of problems. How come you didn't get the luggage allowance you needed when you booked?

But they do sometimes offer to take your cabin luggage into the hold for free when you're checking other hold luggage in. It makes it easier for them because there's less demand for the overhead lockers although you can't rely on it as a strategy, it's just luck and not everyone wants to do this anyway as you have to wait for it at the other end or if you're carrying anything valuable or delicate.

ryanbloodyair · 12/08/2021 13:35

@Chewbecca no, not another bag, the 10kg that I paid extra for to carry on I would like to put in the hold instead. I'm just asking if they will charge to put the bag onto a different park of the plane. I'm literally just looking for a yes or no answer.

OP posts:
harriethoyle · 12/08/2021 13:37

Yes they will, either in advance or at the airport.

spongedod · 12/08/2021 13:37

Yes. It's no longer a carry on bag if you wish to check it. You pay. And you will pay more unless you do it online prior to boarding (at least 2 hours I think, you can't do a last minute job)

The solution is to either buy the stuff when you get to your destination, but it after security or put the stuff in the checked bag you have and put some of the checked bag stuff in the carry on.

The answer is yes, they probably will charge. It doesn't matter if it doesn't make any sense. Ryanair make a good proportion of their profit by charging people when they don't follow their confusing and illogical rules.

Airports make a good proportion of their profit by selling people things after security that they either took off them at the security gate, or told them not to bring them with them.

emmathedilemma · 12/08/2021 13:53

If you look on their website it's from 6euro for the 2 priority bags, including a 10kg hand luggage bag and from 12.99 for a 10kg checked-in bag so my guess if they will charge you extra, and probably the full amount rather than the difference! It will also more if you do it at the airport.

Can you not just pack things into different bags so the liquids go in the hold case and whatever would have been in there goes in your hand luggage? Make you max out the kid's hand luggage allowance too!
oh, and make sure you check in online or they charge for that as well!

emmathedilemma · 12/08/2021 13:54

oh here you go, next page from the link I sent above
"Priority & 2 Cabin Bags costs between €/£8 to €/£22, and is non-refundable. It cannot be switched between passengers or to other bag options."
help.ryanair.com/hc/en-gb/articles/360017825358
So that's a no.

In which case the OP simply needs to add a checked bag to her booking ASAP. It will be much cheaper to do it now than at the airport.

Ryanair make a good proportion of their profit by charging people when they don't follow their confusing and illogical rules.

It’s not a confusing or illogical rule. If anything, I find Ryanair one of the clearest airlines in terms of hand luggage policies. Sure, they charge you for bringing an extra breath of air on board. But they make it clear, there’s no way you can miss their policies when you book a flight.

No airline will automatically let you convert your hand luggage allowance into hold luggage. Sometimes you get lucky if you’re also checking other bags and the person at the check in counter is nice enough. Or if you’re a frequent flyer they will often offer to take the bag for free. Now with Covid some countries have this as a blanket policy for all airlines, but not the UK. It’s nothing to do with Ryanair.
