Chances of Spain going red in next 10 days?

Just that really. Is there a danger do we think?

I thought they only made changes every 3 weeks.

Saw someone on Twitter say this...

Logistically impossible. Spain is such a popular place for British tourists and all of them suddenly having to require hotel quarantining upon arrival back into the UK is the middle of the summer holiday would make it nearly impossible to enforce

SpringRainbow · 05/08/2021 05:52

I wouldn’t really rule anything out, regardless of what they say they will have some sort of watch list of countries whose data they are closely monitoring.

If the data goes in a way which they don’t like then I wouldn’t put it past them to move any country.

The big question to ask is how much notice will they give IF a country goes red.

It's staying at amber

notimagain · 05/08/2021 07:36

..and any idea of a formal Amber watchlist killed off, though there are still concerns about Spain..

“ However, in a final note of caution, the government has warned there are still concerns about Spain, the most popular summer destination for British tourists, and said it would keep the country under close watch.

Concerns had grown that the UK would not have hotel capacity for hundreds of thousands of people returning from Spain if it was forced on to the red list, which requires quarantine in a supervised facility. Even during last year’s disrupted travel season, at least 3.2 million Brits travelled to Spain.”

If that’s a question to me with the, then the answer, IMHO as somebody who worked in the travel industry, at airports, is that one look around your local airport(s)should be a clue…

If you look back to earlier this year HMG waited until daily passenger numbers arriving at the likes of LHR (major major airport with multiple hotels on the perimeter) from India to be down at around a maybe a couple of thousand a day, probably less, before managed quarantine was introduced. Even then it took a major efforts/cash input by the government before they could find enough hotels with enough rooms to accommodate arrivals. Some hotels simply weren’t interested because of the effect being a quarantine hotel had on other trade.

There simply aren’t enough hotel rooms (plus buses and security security personnel available ) around most major UK airports such as Heathrow, Gatwick or Manchester ATM, let alone the smaller ones to cater for somebody in HMG throwing a switch and turning Spain red overnight.

mamatoTails · 05/08/2021 15:55

Things are quite stable here at the moment. Cases starting to drop again, but obviously the more people that come and move around the country it does fluctuate. It's nothing like it was with cases last year though so I can't see it going red.

notimagain · 05/08/2021 17:12

The political, let alone logistical consequences of HMG putting Spain on the Red list once tens of thousands of people have travelled there and are sitting in the sun on holiday wouldn’t bare thinking about.

Judging by what’s in at least one or two of the UK tabloids I think one or two Ministers (one in particular) are trying to hedge their bets but objectively they either have to put Spain on red tonight/tomorrow (before significant numbers have left the UK ) or they have to wait several weeks until after the school holidays or even later when most holiday makers are back…all of course still very much IMHO.

We are currently in the Balearics, travelled out 2 weeks ago and will be here till the end of the month. 1st August and it got pretty busy here. Our bigger concern is less the UK moving Spain to red, like others here, the scale of the implications seem unlikely though not impossible and more actually catching covid prior to our return to the UK. We are lucky and have a home to stay in, but increasing reports over "covid hotels" being full and the conditions in them, would have me thinking twice. Everyone talks about the red list implications but with rising rates I'd urge anyone to have a back up if you do come out and catch covid.

80sMum · 05/08/2021 18:12

It remains a possibility, yes. Personally I wouldn't advise anyone to go abroad on holiday if they haven't factored in the potential costs and extra time off work that would be required if they had to quarantine on their return.
There are people complaining today about Mexico. They apparently had only just arrived in Cancun when it was announced that Mexico is to be on the red list. Nobody forced them to go to Mexico! They should have considered the possibility of a category change before they booked, imo.

Sour grapes. I think people have considered however its likely to be like this for a long time realistically.
ilkleymoorbartat · 05/08/2021 19:07

@Annexlife how do the hotels work? Do you just have to go to them if you're staying in a hotel? If you have a villa cab you isolate there?

OP posts:
Annexlife · 05/08/2021 19:17

If you are in a hotel and test positive you are moved to a quarantine hotel, where, like the UK, you are in your room isolated for 10 days, however, unlike the UK, my understanding is the Spanish government pay. But it is very basic. If in a private villa it will depend on the owner and if they have other clients arriving. We are fortunate and have our own home so can stay here if it happens. With 2 young children I couldn't consider what it would be like in a hotel room with them!

Next review is what, two’ish weeks off?

In which case it’s too early to tell, but IMHO if their daily case numbers remain fairly stable and if a load of new hotels don’t get built in the next fortnight around British airports I suspect it won’t go red….

Be better placed to guess next week.

maddy68 · 09/08/2021 00:16

Really unlikely bsoain has a higher vaccination record and a much lower incidence rate than the UK

IndieTara · 09/08/2021 14:34

I hope it doesn't I've booked flights for me and DD for 23 August to and see my parents in Spain . At least if we do have to isolate we can do it at their house

I think it’s hotel quarantine isn’t it? If you get a positive while you’re out there.
notimagain · 09/08/2021 15:21

I’m confused by some of the above - in the context of the UK red list and Spain:

If( very much an if) Spain goes on the Red list you would go into managed (hotel) quarantine on return to the UK at your port of arrival, and that’s regardless of any testing…

Pissinthepottyplease · 09/08/2021 16:17

Yes that’s true. Other people are also talking about what happens if you test positive in Spain.
