Holiday abroad 33 weeks Pregnant - is it a crazy idea?

FTM who will 33+2 when I fly out to Mallorca next week to stay at my in-laws apartment. I have loads of holiday to use and have had a really easy pregnancy to date with no complications, so I was keen to get a week of sun and relaxation in before I get any bigger and can't, as well as won't want to, travel. As well as get this last bit of quality time just the two of us. My husband can't take much time off work (we are saving it for when the baby arrives) so I am planning to fly out 3 days earlier and then he'll join me for 5 days, before flying home together when I will be 34+3. I've seen a doctor and have fit to fly certification, the only thing I have left to do is get travel insurance which I believe I can with Admiral but it won't cover natural birth (and I don't believe there are any insurers who will past 32 weeks) so that would be a risk I would be taking. My mother in law (whose apartment we would be using) says she is happy for us to go but had expressed her concerns tonight over it, and in particular me being my myself for 3 days first. So now I feel completely torn, and really have to make a decision so I can cancel my time off work if we decide to not go.
Just wondering if anyone else has flown/ holidayed abroad this late in pregnancy? Is this a crazy and reckless thing to do? All I plan to do is lie by the pool, read and relax, and I know the chances of me going into labour are slim but of course it does happen. Any advice or experience anyone can share would be really appreciated, thanks

I really don't understand why you want to take multiple risks you don't need to take.

I drove back from Spain and had a dd 10 days later full term.

I’m on the fence about it.

We live overseas and (pre Covid) used to fly a lot for work, trips back to the UK etc. I’ve flown from the Middle East to China, South Africa and the UK at 32+ weeks and always been quite comfortable doing so.

In this pregnancy (ie in a pandemic) I flew from the ME to Cyprus at 30w and to be honest, for me personally, that’s about my limit. I wouldn’t want to travel much later as I would be concerned about testing positive and then being ‘stuck’ somewhere and potentially going over the 36 week limit to be permitted to fly.

I would honestly just book into an amazing spa hotel in the UK for a few nights. Eat, sleep, read a book, swim, get a massage and repeat!

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 09/07/2021 14:00

I wouldn’t. DD arrived at 34 weeks after a completely uneventful pregnancy and we were in hospital for a month.

No chance in a pandemic would I consider this

So many healthy women go into preterm labor. I did. i didn't live in a country with free medical care, but I did have excellent insurance. Otherwise, I would have had a bill that would have left me in debt for the rest of my life. Is that what you want to risk? As well as your baby's life? For a few days of vacation? If you have to get away, do it immediately, not when it's too late to be covered by insurance.

AdriannaP · 17/07/2021 05:51

Pre-covid I have done it. With Covid (and currently 30w myself) no way - you can get stuck in the country or have to self isolate on return. I am missing two very important maternity appointments as I am currently self isolating (DC1 caught covid at school). No way would I want to risk anything that late in pregnancy. It’s just not worth it. Are you fully vaccinated?

timeisnotaline · 17/07/2021 05:58

No. Too much risk. I went to Santorini at 34.5 weeks and had an awesome time, but 1. That was pretty COVID, both the risk of catching it and frequently changing quarantine restrictions and 2. I was insured - you’d be nuts to do it even ore covid not insured!!

timeisnotaline · 17/07/2021 05:59

Pre covid not pretty covid

Kollamoolitumarellipawkyrollo · 17/07/2021 06:01

No.
I had a preterm spontaneous labour at just 34 weeks with no signs at all.
Covid is so transmissible at the moment - I know of double jabbed people with it.
Being on your own at this stage would be irresponsible.
What if you caught COVID and had to isolate there?
You have no insurance.

I’d go to a spa hotel for a couple of nights if you need the break.

NakedAttraction · 17/07/2021 06:02

Pre covid I would totally have done this with a low risk pregnancy. But why would you want to get on a plane full of people, most of whom won’t have been tested (not a requirement to Spain if double vaxxed or younger)?

There is increasing evidence that covid in the latter stages of pregnancy is very high risk (which is why there should have been more focus on getting pregnant women vaccinated, but that’a a whole other thread).

Hardbackwriter · 17/07/2021 06:04

Sorry OP but I agree with everyone else. Pre-covid would have been one thing - personally 33 weeks would have been pushing it for me, though I had a lovely holiday at 29 weeks - but not now.

jamsandwich1 · 17/07/2021 06:09

I absolutely would not. Obviously it’s up to you but anything could happen although chances are slim. This is without considering COVID situation.

sarahc336 · 17/07/2021 06:27

Eugh pregnant in the heat abroad, not a chance 🤯🤯🤯 what would you do if you went into early labour? Your not too far off being full term now xx

Jent13c · 17/07/2021 06:34

I flew at 35 weeks pre covid. I can't remember where we got insurance from (think it was maybe bupa?) But I was living in UAE and came back to the UK for my graduation. So essentially the insurance was really to cover me while on the flight.
I wouldn't recommend it, I had a full prenatal check up (including cervical check) and the only thing the doc recommended was flightstockings but I couldn't source them in time. I had the worst calf pain in my life the night I arrived and was convinced I'd given myself a DVT. It qwas .y second pregnancy, first born was textbook and a late arrival but when I got back to UAE had multiple reduced movements and CTGs that were abnormal so he was born early (with his cord wrapped around him 8 times).

In COVID times? Absolutely categorically not. There were 2 pregnant ladies in the ICU near me recently. The risk is so high that all of the NHS are finishing working at 28 weeks so why would you risk it for a holiday? The weather is lovely just now!

MonsterKidz · 17/07/2021 06:36

I am afraid the risks would be too high for me/

User5827372728 · 17/07/2021 06:37

I did at 34 weeks but this was pre covid

I probably wouldn’t this year with covid!

Loads of nice places in U.K. to explore
