Bedruthan Hotel-Anyone been?

We’re off to the Bedruthan Hotel in July for a few nights. I’ve not been to Cornwall before and this isn’t our usual type of holiday. Has anyone been? We’re dining in the Herring most nights and I wondered if I need to dress up a little?

Bumping to see if anyone’s got any info about the Bedruthan

Been many times and it’s recently changed A LOT.

Re: Herring. That one is adults only (or was pre-Covid) and the expectation was chinos/smart jeans with no holes for men, linen trousers or smart-casual dress for women. Absolutely no need for anything more. Heels are fine but I wore flats like 50% of the other females.

They know you’re in holiday and have no expectations that you should spend time making an effort for the staff. If it’s a special occasion by all means, wear a lovely dress and you won’t feel awkward but honestly, I wear linen trousers, smart flip-flops or sandals and a cotton blouse.

I’ve literally gone onto M&S and screenshot the first 2 outfits that kind of sum up what I would wear there.

Thank you @BelterDelta that is incredibly helpful. We’re only staying for 4 nights and are flying to Newquay so won’t have a huge amount of luggage. We will have our 16 year old with us but they’ve taken our bookings for the Herring so will hopefully be okay?

In what way has it changed? Is it for the better or worse? It looks great but what has been your experience?

Your 16 year old will be allowed in, it’s the little ones that need babysitting that they don’t like! They like them to be in The Wild Café instead. You’ll all be fine in The Herring.

You will be able to predict what’s on the menu as if it’s the same as before, it’s what is leftover from lunch, just given a different name when written on the menu. Then for the following lunch it’ll be given another new name. But the food is locally sourced, organic where possible, really good. They have great chefs who add a twist here and there. One thing to note: Breakfast items not on the menu can be added eg if you fancy a boiled egg but it’s not listed, just ask.

The things that have changed shouldn’t affect you if you don’t have youngsters, as that’s where all the change has taken place. The play areas have moved, the dance floor was the kids entertainment zone but is now aimed at your market eg sociable drinks at the bar.

There will be pool (as in snooker) there’s a library, there’s so much, it’s lovely and if you get to go to The Scarlet (it’s sister hotel literally 200 steps away) that really is luxury. My absolute heaven. My go-to.
Well worth looking at, even just online for the future Wink.

You’ll be fine there, nothing is too much trouble...please don’t be put off by the approach (the carpark) This does nothing for what’s hiding inside. Never judge a book by the cover x

Cornwallnewbie · 06/06/2021 22:36

Thanks @BelterDelta. We actually wanted to book the Scarlet but they wouldn’t accept the 16 year old. The breakfasts are all going to be delivered to bedrooms this year which is a little disappointing but we’re looking forward to the food. As I say, it’s not our usual sort of holiday, but I think DP and DS will enjoy some surfing and I’ll make do with the spa.

When we spoke to Bedruthan last week they told us to tell them if we fancied b/fast in the restaurant as they could accommodate this, so you could mention this?

Cornwallnewbie · 07/06/2021 17:14

Thanks!

@BelterDelta hope you don't mind me asking, would you say it has changed for the better/worse for younger kids? Was thinking of going with a 10, 8, 6 and 2 year old next year.

BelterDelta · 08/06/2021 12:04

Hi Dream,

I genuinely don’t know I’m afraid. I’ve been speaking with David the GM and we did a quick nosey last year when we were in the area. I asked about all the negative reviews and changes on Tripadvisor and to be fair, he did explain everything very well. The outdoor play area has been relocated just a fraction to the left (the big wooden ship has gone) but the zipwire and sunken trampoline is still there) I have mobility issues so our reason for noseying around was to know which rooms to book before taking the plunge.

This year unfortunately they now are not doing the childcare within the creche Sad nor taking the older ones away from the parents/carers to the beach to allow them time-out.

Whether they’re using Covid as an excuse that we get to spend time together as a family I don’t know but it does seem they’re aiming for the teenage market now, with ‘couples only’ going to The Scarlet.
It would have been nice to have had that option given that some of us have been locked away with our little darlings for 18months and are in desperate need of time out for our own sanity!

The large bar area where children were entertained is now a social area for the elders (with sofas and magazines I believe) and apparently youngsters were put in a top floor room and parents had no drinks bar to access like before.

When we go in a few weeks, I am expecting art and craft clubs to be laid on which we have to attend with our child plus bookable swimming slots.

Dreamofholidays · 08/06/2021 12:38

@belterdelta thank you for getting back to me. Hopefully some of the offering will return when covid has gone. I'll keep an eye on trip advisor next year

Cornwallnewbie · 10/07/2021 17:11

We’re just back, it was great. The spa is fantastic but only bookable in half hour slots, likewise the indoor pool. The weather wasn’t great this week and they had a shortage of lifeguards so the outdoor pool wasn’t open.
We gad a non sea view triple room (only thing available when i booked) and it was lovely.

Breakfast in the room was actually a bit weird but could have been worse. There’s no choice, they just deliver it when requested but some components were a little bizarre. Cheeseburger for breakfast? But it was plentiful.
We ate every night in the Herring and it was very good indeed, some memorable food. They are a bit under staffed but everyone was lovely and helpful. I would really recommend.

@Cornwallnewbie
Thankyou for the update - very much appreciated!

Shame the pool time is so limited and I’m trying to get my head around a cheeseburger for breakfast 😬 I guess I have to be grateful that at least this year I get to cross a county border!!!

Cornwallnewbie · 12/07/2021 12:39

The breakfast consisted of a hot savoury item, a pastry, yoghurt, fruit, granola/oats, juice, tea/coffee. You phone when you want it and it generally comes within 10 mins. On our last day it took an hour and we had to decline it as we had to get to the airport but they took it off the bill no problem.

OP posts:
BelterDelta · 12/07/2021 14:27

Their breakfast always was that so that hasn’t changed as such but a cheeseburger for breakfast is most definitely a new item Grin

There used to be the choice of a Full English too but it sounds like that’s been removed from the menu?

10 minutes seems prompt.

Cornwallnewbie · 12/07/2021 15:11

Yes no full English. They were really prompt apart from the last day. They do have some staffing issues though so everything is a bit tight. Maybe someone didn’t turn up that morning?

Also meant to say that the toiletries provided were fantastic, really lovely

Resurrecting this thread...
I am thinking of booking a 4 or 5 night break at Bedruthan this summer. However we've never been and I'm a little worried by some of the awful reviews from last summer. Has anyone got recent experience/knowledge?
My kids are aged 8 and 14 so I don't need the creche etc, I'm attracted by the proximity to the beach and (hopefully) surfing, plus swimming pools. Although I didn't realise the outdoor pool isn't heated. Really keen to hear any feedback, good or bad.
