Just want to join the thread say thank you to @PuffinShop and @HappyFamiliesSeries2 very helpful, have been hoping to go in forever but planning now for next year.

mrsrobin · 23/06/2021 13:38

You must be off soon Happy Families! Hope you have a fab time :)

HappyFamiliesSeries2 · 23/06/2021 15:40

I will unless Icelandair break me! Keep cancelling flights - I'm now going from/to Manchester but via Heathrow both ways...

But it'll all be worth it when I'm sat in a hot tub with a beer, looking across a fjord

mrsrobin · 23/06/2021 16:48

Sounds lovely! I can't wait now :)

PuffinShop · 23/06/2021 21:18

My parents are here from the UK right now. Both vaccinated and flew with Icelandair from Heathrow. Everything went very smoothly.

PuffinShop · 23/06/2021 21:24

I've heard from other British immigrants here that the Sunday Heathrow flight is the most reliable right now and the one that is never cancelled.

mrsrobin · 23/06/2021 21:32

I am booking with BA but hoping will be OK - also from LHR. Thanks for the info Puffin!

mrsrobin · 26/06/2021 16:36

Flights booked, car booked - a few hotels booked :)
But could anyone please advise - we are going to the Snaefelljokull peninsula - we will hope to see Orcas on the whale watching boat from Olafsvik. My question is - which is prettier to stay in - Olafsvik or Grundarfjordur?

HappyFamiliesSeries2 · 27/06/2021 11:21

Sorry, only ever stayed in Stykkishólmur round there.

Stopped in Grundarfjordur last time for coffee and cake and it looked fine, not sure we've ever stopped in Olafsvik.

mrsrobin · 27/06/2021 12:42

Thanks Happy, found a place just outside Grundarfjordur that I have booked.
Just to give me an idea on prices, how much is coffee and a cake in a cafe approx?

mn2022 · 27/06/2021 12:44

@FiveGoMadInDorset

We went February last year, me DD14 and DS 11, all loved it, we stayed 4 nights, organised tours to see the golden circle and the Northern lights and then spent the rest of the time in Reykjavik, stayed at the Hilton, expensive but worth it and we would all like to go back.
I am looking at doing this next year. Can I ask roughly how much it cost,
Atalune · 27/06/2021 12:49

Place marking. Such a useful thread!

Eleoura · 27/06/2021 16:48

What time of year are you thinking of going? We went in Dec a few years ago. Really enjoyed it, but being winter, we stayed doing things in and around Reykjavik. My tips:

  • We stayed at a hotel with a kitchenette. Very handy to make your own breakfast, or re-heat take away food and save money.
  • In winter, there were many coach trips to the main sites, which was much easier than hiring a car

-If you go to the blue lagoon, take some cheap flip flops with you. Some packages charge extra for them!

  • The penis museum ais fascinating
Cowbells · 27/06/2021 16:57

It's wonderful. We loved it, so did DC. If you do a Golden Circle tour choose one that includes the Secret Lagoon - after looking at waterfalls and geysers (amazing) you get to swim in a natural hot rock pool. You can order drinks there too. We went in winter and swam under starlight. It's much more natural than the Blue Lagoon (though I loved that too.)

It can be expensive but the municipal thermal pools are very reasonable and good fun with massive LED lit water tunnels, floating chess sets, wave machines etc. If you choose self catering, the supermarkets are similar prices to UK and the one wine shop in the whole of Reykjavik is also similar price to UK but eating out and drinking in bars is very expensive.

It's worth climbing up the tower of Hallgrimskirk (the big white church) for a great view.We also went to free concerts there. There are loads of quirky cafes and music shops and the people are so friendly. You can go whale watching or just for a boat ride. We also did a Northern Lights tour at midnight which your DC are old enough to stay up for.

We were there for about four days and loved every minute. Not sure if you'd run out of things to do if you were there for longer unless you have loads of money for dog sledding and similar activities.

Sunnidayz · 28/06/2021 09:41

Following with interest, I'd love to visit Iceland one day. Are the tours/accomodation etc expensive too or just the food costs? Thanks.

mn2022 · 28/06/2021 10:54

So I have settled on Saariselka. Was thinking of 5 nights, will this be enough? Thanks so much everyone for your help

PuffinShop · 28/06/2021 12:02

So I have settled on Saariselka.

Isn't that in Finland? It's certainly not in Iceland unless you are spelling it very wrong!

Just to give me an idea on prices, how much is coffee and a cake in a cafe approx?

I'd expect to pay about 600 for a coffee and 800-1000 for a piece of cake.

Some other general tips:

Buy alcohol at the airport if you can be bothered to carry it - much cheaper. Otherwise of course the off licences are cheaper than bars but less fun. There is way more than 1 off licence in Rvk - 6 in Rvk and 13 in the capital area I think.

Bónus (weird pig logo) and Krónan (coin logo) are the cheaper supermarkets. Don't go to Hagkaup and really really don't go to 10/11. I think even Bónus is more expensive than the UK but it's as good as you can get here.

Don't buy bottled water, it is exactly the same as the tap water.

The hot water and the drinking water come out of the same tap but they are NOT from the same source. If you want to drink the water, run it cold for a good few seconds to flush out any hot water. Hold your hand under and you will feel it suddenly get colder. The hot water is sulphorous and does not taste good, although great for long showers as it never ever runs out. I have seen a lot of people complaining about the taste of the tap water but I guarantee they were drinking the hot water.

PuffinShop · 28/06/2021 12:10

Here's a couple of photos from the trip we did this weekend - needs a 4x4. Gjáin is a beautiful area of waterfalls and streams and a bit further down the road is Háifoss, the tallest waterfall in Iceland. It was a great trip. There are also archaeological remains at Stöng and a replica longhouse just off the main road.

You can hike from Stöng to Háifoss via Gjáin, apparently 8 km one way. I would have loved to do it but not really an option with a 6 yr old and a 3 yr old.

PuffinShop · 28/06/2021 12:18

Oh I just looked it up to double check and apparently it's not quite the tallest. But it's pretty tall! See the red speck which is a person at the bottom for a sense of scale.

HappyFamiliesSeries2 · 28/06/2021 20:08

Arrived today! Got through the thoroughness of the Icelandic PCR test (they go right up to your brain with the nasal swab) and now looking at the lovely view from our quarantine apartment in Eyrarbakki - hopefully will get the all clear later tonight or first thing tomorrow.

Couldn't do any sightseeing yet but luckily we were on the right side of the plane for the volcano

Really? That's quite new, I think. When we went (about 8 years ago) I'm sure there was only the airport or the one state-approved off licence in the whole city.

RedToothBrush · 28/06/2021 21:49

The last time we went we found that it was so busy with tourists it was difficult to get a table at a restuarant - certainly not the better ones - without booking ahead.

Its probably not that bad at the moment given the circumstances, but its definitely worth keeping in mind for anyone making notes for next time.

Given its so expensive to eat out we've done our own sandwiches / gone self catering so that we keep the costs down a bit and then picked the places we wanted to go most.

Personally I think the Golden Circle is a bit of a nightmare to do these days and there are much better and more interesting tours if you do some hunting around and look for smaller operators. The crowds on the Golden Circle aren't fun.

@mrsrobin The first time we stayed in Iceland we based at Kirkubaejarklauselur. It was really good as a location to do the southern ring road. Its far enough around to do some good day trips out further than the coach tours usually go or it at least gives you the time to beat them, and theres some amazing things to see.

Personally for a last night I would probably stay in Reykjavik before going back to the airport - depending on what time I'd arrive back in the city and what time my flight was. Simply because its really not a huge drive and there is more to do in the evening. There really is very little in Keflavik itself. As for Grindavik, the only reason I'd stay there would be to go for a night hike up to the volcano site. When we went there we found it - how can I say this politely - pretty grim. It an experience to see, as its a proper little fishing village, but its not particularly the nicest place to stay - but yeah its not exactly somewhere to actually go and 'see' if that makes sense especially if you are staying / visiting smaller settlements for the rest of your stay. Grindavik is perhaps the least inspiring place in Iceland I've visited. I'm sure this is likely to change in the next 18months if the volcano keeps going on. Reykjavik is definitely worth a visit on the other hand. It is not a big place at all. Its very pretty and unique. Although its the capital it really not that big. It is worth a walk up to the church and down by the sea front and around the lake one evening if nothing else. And there are some fabulous places to eat out. It just is a lovely little place.

If you do buy alcohol at the airport, I would recommend stayed as far away from the wine as you can. It seemed like Iceland imported the wine that the rest of Europe wouldn't touch!

I love Iceland and would go back again in a heart beat.

But be prepared for the weather. It is dreadful. I have never been as cold as I was whale watching. It gets in your bones in a way that you have to experience to understand.

If you hire a car any time other than summer make sure you are an experienced driver and have driven in snow. And make sure you pay attention to the iceland weather and road conditions. It can be very changable. We have nearly been caught out in March with an incoming storm when we had gone on a day trip. Fortunately we knew it was coming so had left promptly but we know that it was a problem that day in the area we had come from. DH is a very good driver and found it hairy.

mrsrobin · 28/06/2021 21:57

Redtooth - thanks for the info - we will have a think about the last night again - just can't decide!

Happy Families - have a great time!! :)

RedToothBrush · 28/06/2021 22:02

mrsrobin my suspicion is that when you look at where is available to stay you will find there is relatively a somewhat limited choice for a single night closer to the airport, outside Reykjavik.
