Anyone been to a medieval banquet?

Thinking of going to a medieval banquet with my daughter. It's about £36 for me and £20 for her. This seems to be a good rate when I've looked around. It's in a castle, not too far away from us and we could stay the night for £54 if we wanted.

But are they good fun? I'm a little concerned with the time of year, is it going to be full of raucous workmates getting drunk and then maybe later running around the castle? Sounds great to me, but don't know if it might upset my 8 year old daughter.

They're laying on medieval entertainment ..what's that then? If anyone has any experience of this type of thing I'd love to know!

Went ot the Tower of London for a medeval night on my hen night. We were originally sat next to an all male very raucous table who started throwing food. We asked to be moved and after that we had a great night. The entertainment was really good.

Went ot a slightly better one food wise in Wales for a xamas night out a few years previous to my hen night. The food was better, the setting was better, not as commercial but the entertainment was not so good. I think there were children at this one.

We went to one in Florida and loved it, very noisy and not for the timid but great fun. The one we went to was not full of drunk parties but just families who joined in with ghusto.

I didn't realise they did them here, where is yours, dd wold love to go to another one.

Went to one twenty years ago! In fact, I helped make the costumes for a friend who was going into the medieval banquet business! It was all very authentic, down to the ingredients used in the food (although the costumes were mostly made of upholstery fabrics!). Entertainment was music, a jester, and some dancing.

i had a great time, but wouldn't have recommended it for an 8 yr old, but maybe you could phone the organisers and ask what's laid on, and whether there will be Christmas revelry going on!

My dd was 5 when she went.

I went to one a few years back. Great fun (you had to immerse yourself in the huge cheese fest that they are). Very bawdy, and loud. Lots of double-entendres, and buxom wenches leaning over pouring mead (DH was in heaven). I imagine they would be very raucous at this time of year.

In Nottingham we have two permanent medieval banquet places (Robin Hood and all that ...)
Lots of wine and ale flows and the entertainment is not really geared for children. I've only been as part of a big work group at Christmas and as the others have said it gets very raucous!

Thanks for the replies. Think I'll ring the castle tomorrow to find out if there's an evening where there's a few children going.

They're having quite a few over the next few weeks so hopefully there'll be at least one evening that's suitable. They start at 6.30pm/7pm, which is a really good time for my daughter. Some of the other ones seem to start at 8.30pm/9pm, which is too late for us.

Mc Dreamy, where was the one in Wales, not Ruthin Castle, North Wales was it? That's where we're thinking of going.
