can anyone recommend a good part of southern france for a family holiday. We would like to be in the countryside with things to do for the children eg waterparks, places to visit and of course france is so huge y head is spinning. I would like to go further south than the dordogne.

We went to the South of France this summer with 5yo DD. We stayed near Bagnols en Foret. We stayed inland from Frejus, which was a great base for seeing more places. We visited Frejus, St Raphael, St Tropez, Cannes, Monaco, Nice, Sainte Maxime, Grasse, Aiz en Provence and Vence . Even had a day trip into Italy. It is a really lovely area. There are a couple of water parks near Frejus. We didn't bother though as our villa had a lovely big pool.

I'd say languedoc too, beautiful area, and plenty of airports, close to the beach, cities, wine lakes.

dear aznerak - I did look at your parents villa but it is fully booked so no luck there. Does anyone know good areas inthe Lot/gers/toulouse area? Also hulababy where did you stay and could you recommend it?

Sorry - didn't realise you were looking for school hols. We get booked up really quickly for those weeks as we provide so much for people and get repeat bookings. Maybe keep it in mind for 2009?!?!?!

We went to Aigues-Mortes which is in the Gard. Aigues-Mortes is a lovely medieaval walled city and we were walking distance for a 3yo into the pedestrianised city square - full of lovely outdoor eating places. It was about 5/10 mins drive to several lovely safe beaches, lots of flamingoes around, and we did trips to Montpellier, Arles, Pont du Gard, round a vinery, boat trip in the Camargue etc.

Really love the Haute provence region- but not close to the beaches i'm afraid.
Th Gorge de verdon is spectacular and the surrounding area is breathtaking. Not as crowded as further south and masses to so if you are outdoorsy.\link{http://www.provenceweb.fr/e/alaupro.htm\here)
we went rafting, swam in the river, picnicked in mounatin villages surrounded by lavender fields, drank masses of pink wine and met some wonderful people. It can be quite remote in some places and very unlike the crowded coast.
We flew to nice and hired a car and drove up into the hills through Grasse and beyond.
