Pre booked "Amber" list holidays. Are you going?

Just that really.

If you have an existing booking for a holiday to an "Amber" country, in the next few months, are you going to go?

I've got one booked and just curious what everyone has decided after todays announcement.

There are various considerations, not just green, amber, red list for return to the UK purposes. Will the destination let you in with a recent travel history from the UK, do they require any sort of quarantine or testing beyond a test before arrival? The traffic light list and FCDO advice are different so if the FCDO advices against all but essential travel there are very limited travel insurance options and they are really not cheap.

TheTeenageYears · 09/05/2021 15:00

@99victoria not everyone will test negative 10 days after a positive test. It can take weeks for some to test negative which you will need in order to get back into the UK. A travel test provider I spoke to outside the UK told me that approximately 10% of all those who test positive on a pre flight test go on to test positive a second time 14 days later.

Italy in July... think we have to pay it off this week. 😬 moved from last year. Not sure what to do as I'll be gutted if they cancel and make it green.

mamawithfive · 09/05/2021 22:39

I live in Spain. Our state of alarm has now ended, so we can now leave the region we live and travel anywhere in the county.

I would think we would lift the travel ban to non su after the 31st, but I’m assuming they will see how cases go here now the regional borders are open.

Our vaccines are slow, but getting there. But I doubt many at all under 50 will be vaccinated by the main summer! However, cases are relatively low in some regions, lowest they’ve been for a really long time!

Also, if you are allowed to travel, don’t forget masks aren’t going anywhere here soon, and they are compulsory everywhere, indoor and out, for everyone over 6! You can take them off at the beach / pool once you are sat down but as soon as you get up to walk around they have to go back on!

mamawithfive · 09/05/2021 22:40

Apologies for my spelling errors!

  • country, not county
  • eu, not su

We are booked for greece in august and when booking we planning for 10 days isolation on return. Keeping a close eye on the news

jakeyboy1 · 10/05/2021 07:38

We cancelled ours last night 🥲

AttilaTheMeerkat · 10/05/2021 08:35

ScarletZebra

I hope that you will be able to travel to the US later this year but currently at least there seems to be no will to rescind the travel ban put in place by former President Trump last March. That's the real fly in the ointment with regards to your holiday to the US now.

userxx · 10/05/2021 08:37

@jakeyboy1 so have you lost money?

Frazzled2207 · 10/05/2021 08:44

Spain late august. Expect/hope it to be green by then. We can change up to a fortnight before so happy to wait a bit.
However the tests to return put me off.
Currently sounds expensive and faffy. Hoping Easyjet are going to come up with some sort of deal.

No way would we go if Amber or looking like it might not stay green.

Piptastic · 10/05/2021 09:05

Thank you everyone for contributing to the thread.

UPDATE. We have checked with our insurance provider and we will not be covered if we choose to go against the FCDO guidance ie "you must not travel for leisure". This is a blanket ban and seems to be the same with all insurance providers. We have no choice, I think we have to cancel. I'm absolutely gutted.

So if you were planning on travelling, testing and isolating on your return I don't think this is an option (unless you are prepared to travel without insurance which, I don't think we are. Actually, I know we are not, that would be foolish. I'm just grasping at straws!

I’m
Confused about what is meant by ‘isolate’. Does this mean isolation hotels or isolation at hime? Who is going to enforce it?

userxx · 10/05/2021 09:09

@Piptastic Where did you take that info from ? I'm going to try and get my flights refunded based on that.

userxx · 10/05/2021 09:11

They were doing checks last year on people who were meant to be isolating at home. Random spot checks.

Piptastic · 10/05/2021 09:13

@userxx we chat with my insurance provider.

@Piptastic
But the FCDO advice doesn't say 'you MUST NOT travel' it says 'you SHOULD NOT travel ' and that isn't the same thing

99victoria · 10/05/2021 09:57

Obviously if no one is going to provide insurance for amber countries then the airlines will have no choice but to cancel all the flights and offer refunds so no-one will be going to Europe this summer. In which case they may as well have just made all countries green or red! I mean, what's the point of an amber category?

99victoria · 10/05/2021 10:45

@Piptastic
Have a look at Staysure insurance- they offer an option to add extended cover for travelling to Europe against FCDO advice

userxx · 10/05/2021 10:59

I've just emailed on the beach to ask if amber counties will be cancelled.

Piptastic · 10/05/2021 11:13

@99victoria just checked it out and there is an update on the website that says

"Cover only applies if the FDOC have not advised against all but essential travel"

OP posts:
Piptastic · 10/05/2021 11:24

@99victoria totally agree. It's madness, why bother with Amber. The only option would be to go without insurance which I guess you could (so the airlines can still take you) but you'd be mad to travel without it in a global pandemic. I'm so pissed annoyed by the whole thing

@Piptastic
I just got a quote from them. When I put in my destination it prompted me to add the extension cover

Unless it's Ryanair. Last summer Malta was moved to being against FO advice the week before I was due to travel and my insurance would have been invalidated. The flight still departed without me on it.
