Which city for a city break?

Considering, restriction depending on a city break. Flying on 1 January and retuning on 4 January. We can get direct flights on those dates to the following-

Milan
Oslo
Madrid
Seville
Munich

We are me, DH and DS 13.

We’ve not been to these places before. Have done plenty city breaks but mainly in the summer months. We live in Scotland so not afraid of cold weather.

Madrid.
So much to do, for all ages. Easy to get around, relatively cheap.

Palavah · 05/05/2021 20:47

I'd do Madrid or Seville

MrsPatrickDempsey · 05/05/2021 20:50

Oslo will be freezing. I went in August and it was nippy - nice place but not loads to see.

ShaunaTheSheep · 05/05/2021 20:51

Seville - at least there is some chance of reasonable weather.
Or Oslo or Munich, which will be geared up for winter.

Zodlebud · 05/05/2021 21:15

Oslo is so cold in winter that literally you leave the hotel, get in a cab and dash to get into the next place. Not really the time of year for sightseeing and there’s not huge amounts to see.

I had a fabulous trip to Seville many years ago, although not good if you’re vegetarian as every bar seems to have a jamon hanging behind it (one of the girls we were travelling with thought it abhorrent and refused to eat anywhere other than room service 😂😂😂).

hopeishere · 05/05/2021 21:16

That's interesting about Oslo - was thinking of there for next year!

FizzyPink · 05/05/2021 21:17

Seville is my absolute favourite city ever but we went in the summer, I’m not sure how fun it would be in winter. We mainly spent our time drinking very cheap wine and eating tapas on rooftop bars.

I’ve also done quite a few January city breaks and really recommend Copenhagen and Budapest. Neither were as cold as I was expecting and loads to do. Budapest was very cheap and Copenhagen was very pricey

Defo not oslo in winter- absolutely freezing, you won't want to leave the hotel!

I've been to all those places and my favourite was Seville, followed by Madrid and Munich.

MintyCedric · 05/05/2021 21:29

I've heard good things about Seville.

From a personal POV I'd recommend Vienna if the opportunity arises and you don't mind the cold...clean but full of character, beautiful architecture and lovely people.

Annebronte · 05/05/2021 21:42

Seville’s my favourite of those, though I’ve only been there in the spring.
Not what you asked, but your dates are a great time to go to Venice.

AC12theletterofthelaw · 06/05/2021 07:31

Thanks. I’ll look at Madrid and Seville.

We had Venice booked last year which was obviously cancelled. No direct flights to Venice from Edinburgh or Glasgow otherwise, that would be where we go. Indirect just takes up too much of the 3 nights away.

Also considering Jersey but again, not sure about flights at the moment. Even through London is difficult as the flights aren’t going from the same airport.

Alicante City is lovely, short flight not far from the airport, friendly people. We loved it when we went a few years ago.

We were in Oslo in January 2020. It was unusually warm, according to the locals, it was fine to walk around (we do have good winter clothes, having lived in Boston). We went to the outdoor museum and it was fine, but if it had been colder it wouldn't have been fun. Scotland doesn't compare with a really cold place (we're Scottish too). We enjoyed it, great food plenty to do for three days. It is a relatively small city though and we're not shoppers so I couldn't comment on that. It was quite eye wateringly expensive, of course.
I didn't enjoy Madrid much, it seemed like any old big city and I found the late eating a pain. I haven't been to the others.

I am very fond of Lyon and I loved Helsinki. I hope to go back.

Bruges is amazing In the winter. Classic Christmas

LaLaFlottes · 08/05/2021 14:27

We went to Madrid when DD was a similar age and loved it. Loads to do, nice restaurants, friendly, we had a great time!

If the Prado is open then, I'd choose Madrid.
