Help, DD hates being strapped in & driving in the car

Gave up shopping, order online now and cycle nearly every with both kids now as they both seem to prefer it but heavy going up the hill with 2 kids on one bike!

Last time we visited my parents (Holland) she screamed and kicked and screamed some more all the way to Holland and back (so never again!)

Bought a sheepskin liner for her seat which seems to make a difference but still 90% of the time she will get annoyed, screaming, kicking my chair etc.. although she does fall a sleep easier now but so that was worth it!

However has anybody been in a similar position or is and has some tips as how to get her to sit in the car seat for more then 15 minutes without screaming? Sorry so long!

ds went thru a phase like this. How old is she? We got a few games, an Old Macdonald farm picture to hang on the back of our seat and he had a driving wheel with buttons to make the animals make noises on the pic. From Mothercare i think. Ds much better now in a bigger booster seat, seems more comfortable and less confined. if all else failed on a long trip would a dvd player work? i haven't got one but a friend swears by it.

Wish my ds would go on bicycle seat tho, at 3 he still refuses!

i found in studio catalogue they do an art set it s a case that straps to back of seat opens up into a tray style and has crayons and paper and can also be used as general table has done wonders he just colours untill get where were going

she is 29 months and doesnt like watching telly at all so think that might be a wasty of money. But loves drawing and stuff so that sounds good. What is studio catalogue, do they have a website?

oh dd was terrible in her baby seat but perked up a bit when she got to go forward facing, it must be awful if they still hate it.

we have a cd of action nursery rhymes that she learnt at tumble tots, like peter rabbit and the wheels on the bus so after me teaching her to do the actions to the cd (im the passenger not the driver) she is happy to do the actions in the back by herself.

can you travel at night? A friend does this with her three dc when she drives to family in Ireland so she's guaranteed some peace and quiet.

Pickie · 13/11/2007 22:00

we did attempt that but (travelling at night) but no luck! I simply think she hates being strapped in as she has similar tendencies when in the buggy but then we of course unstrap her but not in the car. I will look into the tray style thing and the CD is also a good idea as she loves me singing bob the builder

Maybe when she is heavy enough to go in a booster seat it will get easier! havent been to Holland for 10 months.

i will try her on the plane but would hate it if she screams the plane down plus it is so expensive!

If there's one fight worth winning it's this one! Both my sisters had serious car crashes with little ones in the car, but babies in the correct seats, so UNHURT, unlike my sisters, who were both badly injured. Ancient history now, but if there's one thing I'm seriously uptight about, it's this.

The only thing is to ignore the noise, don't give in and they get used to it. My kids truly believe the car won't work unless everyone's strapped in! If you loose the battle now, when she's in a booster seat, she'll undo the safety belt herself!

If you do it often enough, you should crack it! 29 months is nearly 3 - quite grown up really, and soon you'll be able to negotiate with her, and explain WHY. It hurts when she falls over at 3 miles per hour, try 30 or even 70.

I'm sorry, I will step down from my soapbox and retreat! It is a life or death argument, so you have to win, even if you need ears plugs!

Pickie · 13/11/2007 22:15

Rachaelsara, we only unstrap her when in the buggy NEVER EVER in the car. DS will moan if we pretend we dont strap him in as he used to undo his seatbelt but that was solved after one session of an emergency stop in out street at 15m. p/h :-)

I wasn't insinuating! I've got three dvd players, crayons, bloody nursery rhyme tapes, sweets , drinks, chocolate anything for a quiet life! We have always been in the car a lot, and I always kept them done up in the buggy (to avoid escapes). We have had many tears, ho hum! The other benefit of the car is my girls can't reach to hit each other!

Good luck, it's probably a phase!

bubblagirl · 14/11/2007 09:11

you can google studio 24 its 9.99 but so worth it my ds loves it and was bad traveller also but as soon as gets in car he's wanting to open it and draw
