Ideas for holidays in the UK with 19 and 16 year old?

I'm looking for ideas for summer holidays in the UK with my DH and kids 19 and 16. We are still aware of Covid so don't want anywhere too busy but want somewhere where we can have a mix of outdoor activities, shopping and restaurants. Thanks in advance.

Perhaps Matlock or Matlock Bath in the Peak District. www.visitpeakdistrict.com/explore/towns-and-villages/matlock-bath-p680391

Hamsterley forest? You could hire bikes, do some walks, go to Durham for the day, do some walks, in the north Pennines or the Yorkshire Dales? Visit waterfalls, wild swimming etc.

Not very lively for teens maybe but nice option if you're trying to avoid crowds.

I think anywhere great is going to be busy, especially this year. And it depends on what sort of things your DC like doing.

Cornwall is busy for a reason. Great beaches, inland and coastal walks. You can go surfing and sailing and other watersports.

Similarly Devon. Little beaches in South Devon around Hope Cove and my favourite, Thurlstone beach. Posh Salcombe for shopping.

Wales is lovely. In North Wales there are walks in Snowdonia and some fantastic beaches. Llandudno is an old fashioned seaside resort with a cable car up great Orme. There are miniature railways and castles to look around in Conway and Caernarfon.

In South Wales we stayed near St David's, a pretty mini city. Lovely beaches in little coves and again coastal walks. There were places offering Canyoning but my DC were too young at the time.

Northumberland is relatively quiet. Bamburgh beach is stunning. The castle at Alnwick was the setting for some scenes in Harry Potter and there is a poison garden which you can take a tour around. You can go across the causeway to Lindisfarne and take a boat trip out to the Farne Islands to see seals and lots of birds. Hadrian's wall isn't too far away nor is Kielder forest for walks.

The Wye Valley? Canoeing around Symonds Yat - they drop you off up river and you paddle with the current, stop along the way for lunch at a riverside pub and then get picked up again down river. The countryside is 'crumpled' looking, there are little towns and as it is border country, run down castles.

And of course beautiful Scotland. We went to the Isle of Mull when DC were young and there was a so much for them to do. We planned to go back when they were older to get a boat to Fingal's Cave but never quite managed it.

Cromer and Norfolk? The Norfolk Broads on a barge? Brighton - beaches and lots of little shops?

A boating holiday is great fun when you're a teen, so I'm sure a cruiser on the Norfolk Broads would be popular. I suspect a lot of people have had that idea though, so I'd book asap, if you're interested.

The other alternative would be to rent, say, a nice flat in Manchester so you have all the shops/restaurants on your doorstep and then do day trips to the Peak District for walking.

Most popular places will be booked up by now, so I'd be looking at a city break with excursions to the countryside. Admittedly it's been a while since I looked but there was lots of lovely accommodation in Edinburgh because festival not on ( although has been revised in some format) so you might get something nice.

Edinburgh is a good idea with day trips out of the city. I think cities will be quiet this year and the countryside busier! Loads to do in Edinburgh and you can get the train or drive out of the city to beautiful countryside/beaches.

Train to North Berwick is 30 mins from Edinburgh and the beaches are lovely. You can walk to quieter ones. If you have a car then you’ve got lots of options.

Edinburgh shopping, museums, Botanics, Castle, Arthur’s Seat, bridges at South Queensferry, Old Town history, cool Stockbridge, bike friendly too if you fancy hiring some.
