YES, post office, supermarkets, etc

MrsBadger · 12/11/2007 20:51

yes he does

high st photographers eg snappy snaps will do the pics

passports can take a while to get so look at into it sooner rather than later

ChasingSquirrels · 12/11/2007 20:51

YES
I took the ds's myself with digital camera.

Hulababy · 12/11/2007 20:52

Yes he does need a passport.

Easiest way to get a baby's passport photo done is to go into a photo processing shop. They will have places where they can take baby's photo whilst he is laying done, and they stand above him.

barbamama · 12/11/2007 20:52

They need them from birth these days - I just did my baby's. The form is a palaver so I can recommend paying the extra to get the post office to check it before you send it if you are in a hurry. Ours came back last week after 2 weeks. I got the photos done in Jessops but they do them at any of thos high street photo places, snappy, snaps etc etc

belgo · 12/11/2007 20:52

yes, sort it out ASAP

smittenkitten · 12/11/2007 20:52

we took photos at home - they have to be against a white background, neutral expression, face a certain size, so thought it was easier to shoot loads off and then choose the best ones

got them developed online and sent a choice of 2 with the passport app. good luck!

tissy · 12/11/2007 20:53

Yes, definitely need a passport.

You would probably be best to go to a photographic/ camera shop, or professional photographer, as the Passport Office have strict rules about what the photo should look like, and if you send in a duff one, it will take time to take more and re-send them.

your ds needs a passport to travel at 16 minutes, let alone 16 weeks.
in fact, legally, he is a person, with all sorts of legal rights as soon as he takes his first breath.
in some places in the world, a child born, but dies soon after, still changes inheritance drastically, as the act of taking a breath means he has inherited from his parents etc, and it will be his heirs who inherit from him etc.
whilst travelling to and from paris is technically not travelling abroad, laws in the uk mean that travelling back they may not let the baby re enter the country without a passport.

i took ds aged 6 weeks to disneyland, and immigration type people were very strict with his passport, whilst giveing ours a cursory glance.

ChasingSquirrels · 12/11/2007 20:54

technically not abroad - is the op not in the uk then?

Olihan · 12/11/2007 20:56

Second Jessops as they lie them on a white cushions and then chack that they fit the passport requirements before they print them.

Also the PO checking service that someone else recommended is great. It costs (£7?) but it means you won't get it returned for a daft mistake. We used the service and had the passport within a week.

LittlePoopsy · 12/11/2007 20:58

Crap, thought so!
Maybe it could be used as an excuse not to go as really dont get on with il's!

you definitely need a passport to leave the UK and enter France.

belgo · 12/11/2007 20:59

when is the trip planned for?

I agree, holidays with extended family memebers are a bad idea.

Piffle · 12/11/2007 20:59

don't you also need to get someone suitably official to sign then photo etc?

LittlePoopsy · 12/11/2007 21:05

Start of Jan, really dont want to go, gonna be really cold etc; but running out of excuses for why they cant visit and we cant visit them, they also bringing their incredibly irritating friends! Oh god this will be awful!

Unfortuantely I suspect you will have plenty of time to get the passport (just short of two months), so you may not be able to use that as an excuse not to go.

mejon · 14/11/2007 12:07

You won't want to hear this, but I applied for DD's first passport at the beginning of last month. I hand delivered the application to the Newport office on Tuesday morning. Got the official documents returned to me on the Saturday morning in the post and within an hour or so, a courier arrived with the actual passport.

As for the photo, I used our digital camera with DD lying on a cream sheet and downloaded it to passpic.com who checked it, and sent 4 passport photos by return of post. It cost around £4.00 I think. The photo looks a little strange around her hair as they seem to have cropped it digitally or something, but the passport office were clearly not concerned.

"in some places in the world, a child born, but dies soon after, still changes inheritance drastically, as the act of taking a breath means he has inherited from his parents etc, and it will be his heirs who inherit from him etc. "

But if a child has died shortly after birth he or she won't have any heirs? Or am I missing something?

nappyaddict · 14/11/2007 12:38

Yes. The best place to get the pics done is a chemist is photo shop where they actually take the photo for you cos they know if it will be acceptable or not. You might not get a decent picture from the machines.

nannyL · 14/11/2007 18:49

Ladymuck i was thinking exactly the same thing

2bamum · 14/11/2007 23:18

Yes he certainly will. Got ours done the other day snappy snaps give you 4 for 4.99
took about 5 minutes. The photo rules aren't so strict for babys but again we just wanted to know it was OK!
