Please talk to me like I am 5. How do you fly to Egypt?

Obviously on a plane Grin

But I am researching having surgery either in Turkey or Egypt. I've never had to book a flight before and it's stressing me out just a little bit already. I prefer the sound of the doctor based in Egypt (is an associate professor in his field, goes all over the world giving lectures and training students) although both doctors are -from what I gather- excellent. I enquired about the cost of surgery at the Egyptian place and they sent me a huge email in response with all the info I could need and there was this paragraph which has confused me slightly, I don't think the fact that English is not their first language is helping.

"Arrival at the airport:
You don't need a visa for any transit outside of Egypt. However you will need a Visa to enter Egypt. Some nationalities don't need to apply for a visa before departure (including US and UK nationals) in this circumstances you can get your visa when you arrive at the airport. Airport has many facilities where you can exchange money and buy sim cards at a very reasonable price (which we recomend)"

So do I need a Visa? If so can I really just rock up at the airport and get one? It sounds almost too easy Confused
How do I book a flight? Where is the best place to book flights? I'm based in Lincolnshire and my closest airport is Doncaster, could probably get as far as Manchester to fly out if needed though.

If anyone could help this total noob that would be awesome, thank you!

I had treatment in Egyptian hospitals twice. Based on my experience, public hospitals: No. Private hospitals: very good and inexpensive. The problem as others have identified is the aftercare. Egypt can be a very challenging place to live. Please do not consider going alone.
Meals: beware you will likely get the runs at some point - how will this impact your recovery?

I worked in Cairo for a couple of years, doing one week on, one week off. You can buy the visas on arrival at the airport. It's just a sticker and costs $25 USD. You can pay in most "common" currencies (sterling, euro etc..) and they will do conversions and change in local. It's very easy, quick and painless.

Re: travelling around... Yeah. Not great. Cairo itself is an "adventure" car-wise. Smile. A lot of the time it's grid-locked, so at least speed isn't an issue, but you'll often have more lanes of cars than marked lanes of road. But it works, and there are remarkably few accidents. Book a car and driver to meet you. Some will come airside at the airport and meet you before you get to the arrivals hall and escort you through the visa process (and often bypass queues by taking you through the diplomatic immigration channel!)

Security rules with my employer stated that it was not safe for us to go to Alexandria by road. The number of terrorist attacks on this road is quite high, so I wouldn't. Personally, I'd fly. You, as a western visitor will not be a specific target, by the way, attacks are mostly aimed at the police, but sometimes non-targeted people get caught up in it.

A lot of the people in my office had, or were getting, weight loss surgery. Possibly from Dr Tamar (it sounds familiar!). It's a common operation there (large meals, often with 3 carbs per dish and social obligation to eat when offered etc..), so surgeons have a lot of experience. Good luck!

You can prebook a taxi in advance from your home to any UK Airport & the same on the way back, from the airport to your home. They will need the flight number, time & dates.

Drink bottled water
No ice

Can you find someone on the FB group to buddy with you & travel at the same time ?

Travel insurance

I anticipate that you will need a covid free test before all flights. What happens if you test positive ? Do you have enough finances to stay longer to quarantine? Or any other complications from the surgery

Not Egypt but a good friend of mine had a hair transplant in Turkey. No issues at all. Beyond delighted with the result and the treatment that he received from staff and surgeons. Good luck OP, it does sound like you are researching it.

You can fly to Alexandria from milan with Wizz. Loads of cheap flights to milan airports from several UK airports. As it is not a connecting flight (ie a through ticket booked through the airline) you will need to build in ample time to allow for your flight connections or maybe an overnight stopover. Also look at the travel forum for Cairo/Alexandria on trip advisor. There will be loads of advice about getting the visa on arrival/transfers etc.
