Travelling to Melbourne with a 9 month year old

Any tips for a long haul to Oz with a very active and intense 9 month old? We're going on Malaysia Airlines with a short stop in KL. Sky cot booked but now worried baby might not fit in it (he is pretty small but even so). We were told the doc can prescribe a mild anti-histamine to keep babies calm on flights (he is not a good flier!) Also any tips for taking food and milk for a 24 hour trip?! Bit worried about security restrictions etc.....AAARGGH. Should we be going at all?

are you bf?
if so it's a piece of cake

and don't forget even if you're not hundreds and hundreds of people do it everyday and survive, just expect to be knackered and out of kilter and if you're not it's a bonus

good luck

I'm travelling to Brisbane with a 9 month old so I do understand your worries but the worst that can happen is the baby will cry a bit

20 odd years a go I travelled to Australia alone with my sons then aged 4 and 14 months,I was terrified but it was fine.

Don't worry too much, what ever happens it's only 24 hours

I'm taking cartons of milk and just some snacks
for the baby, she can share meals with dp and I.

Try to keep up your lo's routine as much as pos
and remember to take fav toy, blanket ect.

A sling is useful during stops as they won't always let you have your buggy.

When're you going, Lillypie? I'm also travelling to Brisbane with a 9mo (going to see family at Christmas). But we're going the long way, stopping in LA for a week to break it up a bit.

also worried he won't fit in the bassinet - he's a hefty chap - and since he is already working on commando crawling and standing, am distinctly nervous about having him on laps for the whole trip...

I'm off on the 4th of dec, going home for Christmas and my lovely sisters wedding
Also to introduce our lovely Isobel to my family.

I wouldn't worry too much about the bassinet,DS2 fitted in one when he was 14 months and he wasn't particularly small .

Issy is crawling already, I'm hoping that by the time we go she'll be on her feet and able to carry her own bags

I leave on Sunday for a month with my family in Australia, travelling alone there and back (eek! usually have dh with me) with my 14 month-old dd. Last time I went she was 10 weeks old and breastfeeding, so this time it's a different prospect entirely!

Just a tip on the food/milk thing. I'm sure other Mnetters have mentioned this but on the milk front you have to open any formula cartons you have at security and then they aren't obviously going to keep for long unrefrigerated. They sell them at Boots once you get through security though, so maybe check ahead that they stock the brand you use.
As for food, the airline should provide baby food (check with them beforehand) and other than that just have a small stock with you. I have had no problem at security flying domestically with jars/tubs of baby food, organix fruit pots etc. Or again, you can buy them at Boots on the other side of security.

Finally, just relax about it all. Loads of people do it every day and survive! Your LO might surprise you by sleeping lots with the movement of the plane and you will be there before you know it!
Good luck!
