Moving abroad/luggage advice

We are moving to NZ in the summer, and have to quarantine for two weeks on arrival. There will be me, DP and DS who will be 7 months.

We're getting a container to move furniture, but there's things we'll need to have before the container would arrive like the crib and car seat etc. I'm assuming that a luggage postal service would be cheaper than buying extra bags for the flight, and less hassle with trying to lug it all around airports and the quarantine facility. We can send things to my parents' house, they'll be picking us up after the quarantine period is finished.

Does anyone have any experience with luggage forward services and any recommendations?

We sent (all) our bits airfreight. Took a couple of weeks, but MUCH cheaper than excess baggage.
The company doing the container might do it for you. Sendmybag is regularly recommended, but check quantities before committing. I think you will exceed their quantities.

Try to come up with an approximate weight. That will help get you a price. You may well find it is cheaper to sell/donate in the UK and buy new in NZ.

Also, on the carseat - are your sure your UK specification meets the NZ requirements?

Good luck!

That's what I was thinking, that we could just send it over since we don't need anything for the 2 weeks we're in quarantine anyway.

Car seat rules/specs are much less strict in NZ actually, it would much more difficult going the other way!

Check your car seat is legal in NZ. I know UK ones aren’t in Australia.

BA carries child car seats for free in the hold, well they did the last time we needed to transport one. It’s worth checking with your airline.

It's definitely legal, have checked the standard already. But will be unwieldy as it's the joie I-spin 360 so has a leg that doesn't retract. Not sure how we're going to manage that Confused

You could always online purchase a portacot from somewhere like "the warehouse" or "farmers" and have it delivered to your parents. Then sell it on trade me once you're established.
There is also a car seat rental "baby on the move" that short and long term rentals if you need it. Actually I think they rent other baby equipment too.
I've always been iffy about putting car seats in the hold but that's just me!
