baby food brands in USA
auntynon · 29/10/2004 11:41
Myself, dh and dd (14mths) going to new york next week. dd can eat 'adult' food but is intolerant to cows milk, soya and egg so I often use jars when I'm out if I can't be sure of ingredients. Anyone reccommend any brands to look out for, even better if organic.
Chuffed · 29/10/2004 11:52
auntynon - I'd take some things with you. In Manhattan there aren't a lot of grocery stores really so it may be hard to find a lot of variety in food. How long are you going for? I'd take at least enough for half your trip so that you have time to track down some options.
Ameriscot2004 · 29/10/2004 12:28
I never bought baby food in the US, but the main brand is called Gerber. They do seem to have a lot of single ingredient fruits and veg, which you may find helpful.
MeerkatsUnite · 29/10/2004 17:52
I would take some of it with you as well, as Chuffed correctly said there are not all that many grocery stores in Manhattan(infact I only saw one "supermarket" type store in the week I was there. That one was on West 57th Street).
If you pack the jars securely in your suitcase (I used to use a large plastic container) you should have no problems.
HTH

The two brands of organic baby food that you see are Gerber Tender Harvest and Earth's Best.
I agree that there aren't too many supermarkets in Manhattan (although there are some), but most drugstores will have some baby food.
turquoise · 29/10/2004 17:59
auntynon - this
supermarket is fab
it's organic, loads of soya products etc. Don't know about babyfood but I would expect so.

We've got a whopper in Madison. I have to ration myself in there because it's SO expensive, but god it's good. And to be able to buy wine at the same time as groceries is a novelty I can't seem to find anywhere else round here
maomao · 29/10/2004 18:06
Earth's Best is very popular. You could look for it at Duane Reade (a drug store that seems to be everywhere). Or, if you find yourself in Chelsea , or at Columbus Circle you can go to Whole Foods (Chelsea: 24th Street and 7th Ave, or 10 Columbus Circle)
KateandtheGirls · 29/10/2004 18:35
LOL
That's one thing we can do in Florida. In fact at Tartget we can buy all the usual Targetty things, and groceries, and beer and wine. There's no reason to leave...

Could I hijack this thread for a moment and ask about 'good' disposables in the US?
We use Moltex in the UK when we have to but I don't know what is available in the US.
maomao · 29/10/2004 19:26
I miss Target AND Whole Foods!
Gem13, I don't know what Moltex is...? (Sorry to be so ignorant!)
turquoise · 29/10/2004 19:34
Gem 13 there I've seen Huggies and Pampers in the supermarkets but my kids are older so I'm not much help there!
KateandtheGirls · 29/10/2004 19:44
I've never heard of Moltex, but Pampers and Huggies are the two big brands in the US.
Gem13 · 29/10/2004 19:45
Sorry not to explain - Moltex are the most environmentally friendly disposables available here in the UK. They use recylced paper and are gel free. There's some debate about whether they degrade or not but they are generally considered to be the best option if you have to use disposables. Usually only found in health food shops rather than supermarkets.
KateandtheGirls · 29/10/2004 19:47
I don't know then in that case. I'm not aware of any nappies that are promoted as being good for the environment. How long will you be here? (If it's not long, maybe you wouldn't feel so bad about using Pampers for a short time.)
maomao · 29/10/2004 20:03
Oh, I see. There's a brand called Tushies (also gel free), and then another ecofriendly company, Seventh Generation, also makes disposable nappies.
Gem13 · 29/10/2004 20:43
Thanks for your replies. I know what to look out for now.
Hijack over - thanks auntynon!
auntynon · 31/10/2004 10:15
Thanks everyone, will be prepared now, I even know about nappies! Only going for a week and do have family in Queens, dd won't starve I'm sure.
