Travel with little ones

What's the furthest you've traveled with little ones on a plane? How old were they, how many children did you take and how was the flight?

5 months old. Australia and Singapore. Just one child. Flights were long but ok.

SnuggyBuggy · 21/02/2021 10:33

4 hours at 10 months and then 2 hours at 20 months. The 10 months was way easier as she slept mostly, at 20 months it was like having a monkey climbing all over us.

Now we have 2 DC I think we'll wait until they are both over 2 and have seats of their own.

FHFG19 · 21/02/2021 11:03

Thanks guys! @SnuggyBuggy that long flight scares me but I guess it's not as long as you think. Did baby sleep on you?

4 months, 8 hours.

She slept a fair bit in the bassinet and was on my lap/nosing over my shoulder the rest of the time. I didn’t see any movies.

NeedToGetOuttaHere · 21/02/2021 22:05

10 weeks on a 4 hour flight.
Way easier than traveling with a toddler.

Rua13 · 22/02/2021 09:33

A 4 hour flight at 4 months.Southeast Asia at 18 months, 2.5 and 3.5 years with 1 child.Travelling with a young baby is easier. My advice is to book night flights as kids should sleep

zafferana · 22/02/2021 15:50

Small babies and long flights really aren't too bad as long as you get a bulkhead seat with bassinet and you are prepared with formula/baby food (if needed), changes of clothes, plenty of nappies, wipes, etc.

Travel with mobile babies/toddlers though ... not so good. We lived in OS when DS1 was little so I did a few long haul flights with him let's just say that some were flights I really don't want to remember!

Twilightstarbright · 27/02/2021 17:45

13 hours at 18m old. He had his own seat but it wasn't much fun.

FHFG19 · 01/03/2021 16:48

So thoughts on a nearly 3 year old to Australia and potentially a small baby end of 2022.... 🤦🏻‍♀️

How many adults?

FHFG19 · 01/03/2021 19:05

4 adults, 4 children

I’ve done london to Oz a few times with my kids - both of them flew for the first time at 10w. The hardest was when my son was 12m and I flew with him by myself (before my daughter was born but without DH) - it’s the worst age as they’re super mobile but don’t have good concentration span for tv. From about 2 onwards he just binge watched tv and then passed out which I’m fine with Grin

I think you’ll be fine w a 3 year old and a baby. Just ask the flight attendants to help if you need (they are lovely and great at holding babies if you need to nip to the loo) and don’t sweat it - it won’t be the most relaxing 24hrs you’ve spent but if you don’t build it up into a big thing it won’t be - set low expectations and it’ll be fine.

@stealthbanana that's so helpful thank you!! I just think even if it's hell, it'll pass! 😂

@FHFG19 absolutely. And probably it’ll be absolutely fine, you’ll get a bit less sleep than if you were alone but it won’t be a big drama.

As one of the Qantas hosties once said to me as I was boarding (and obviously had a worried look on my face): “don’t worry - I guarantee you we’ve all seen worse, and you’ll never see any of your fellow passengers again so don’t give them a second thought!” Bless her.

DonGray · 04/03/2021 11:07

27 hours or so - 3 kids 5y, 3y, 6 mths - 2 adults

We’ve done it with all ages since my eldest was 5 months - kids are 9 and 5 now.

My tip is to have a long layover in Singapore - around 12 hours. Book the transit hotel, get a good chunk of sleep on a proper bed (and they have cots), wander round the airport, for for a swim, look at the butterfly garden, etc.

Then even if you’ve had very little sleep on the first leg, you’re more refreshed before the second.
