Reasonable hotel in Venice ??

Does anyone have a recommendation for a good priced hotel in Venice. It doesn't have to be a palace, but clean and well located would be a bonus!

Many thanks

Depends what you mean by reasonable but last summer we stayed in the annexe of the Monaco and Grand Canal which was wonderful. A stone's throw from St Mark's square. Simple and modern. You have breakfast at the main hotel. Racking my brain to remember the name but I think it is Palazzo Salvagore or very similar. Will root around the vast pile of paper to try and find out but if you go on Hotelsdot com you will find. We booked through octopus.

We are staying 3 nights (and we have 3 kids), so we have to book 2 x rooms. I guess ?100-?150 per room per night is what I'm hoping for .... I'd love the name of that one you stayed in. Thanks.

we stayed at the Lux hotel about 18 months ago, behind St Mark's Square, and it was perfect, easy to find, small but clean rooms, nice staff, I highly recommend it.
Have a look here

You could try the Residence san Marco it has large suites which all share one bathroom spacious but if a bit high in price a few smaller ones not slap bang in san marco area are ca dogaressa , hotel ca d'oro, Locanda la corte all 3* I have an endless list so let me know if I can help more

Thanks for all the recommendations. I have been away for a week, so I'm just reviewing them now.

After reading quite a few reviews on the web, I believe San Marco is not the best place to stay in summer (choked with tourists & restaurants are a rip off).

I have read the Dorsoduro area is a better bet. We could see all the touristy sights around San Marco during the day and go back to this area in the evening for our evening meal & hotel.

The Cannaregio area has loads of good priced hotels too, but it looks a lot further away.

Does anyone know of any areas in Venice to avoid ? i.e. what about around the railway station ??

I'd be very grateful for any advice. Thanks.

There are no 'bad areas' in Venice to be honest round the rail station is fine. If you are thinking of coming in July then might I suggest you stay on the Lido and then come into Venice to see the city but you can go to the beach if the heat is to much !
The city is a rip off only if you go looking to be ripped off e.g. You choose to eat in the trattorie with a waiter standing outside almost begging you to come in . Also the cafes in San Marco are expensive as you pay to drink in the biggest drawing room in the world ( Mussolinis quote not mine !)
You can eat ( and drink) reasonably and all areas of the city are within easy reach as its not that big a city. My suggestion would be either Cannareggio or Dorsoduro.
I suggested a few hotels another is Palazzo Cendon ( adjacent to a very good trattoria / pizzeria). Let me know if you need any more ideas / help

Rosa & everyone, many thanks for all your help. The hotels you suggested all looked gorgeous but because I was booking 2 x rooms, it was still working out really expensive.

Anyway, I managed to book Al Palazzetto, a very stylish little B&B in Cannaregio, near the Ca' d'Oro and Strada Nuova (a big shopping street). I was able to book a Quad room with an extra bed, so the five of us can stay in one room. The room per night is only costing us ?175.00, so its a great deal. Their website is: www.guesthouse.it

I will be very aware "Tourist Menus" this time. The last time my DH & I were there we were literally dragged in off the street by the waiters, and the food was just o.k. and really expensive. This time I won't be taken in!!

Its 11 years since we were last there and I can't wait to go back and show our children beautiful Venezia

Can I suggest that you try to get a copy of Kids Venice it is a fantastic book and great for children to get to know Venice I think you can get it on Amazon. If not it can be bought in the book shop Goldoni off Campo San Luca it is abouit Euro12 and it its a really good buy.
Nice area you are staying in good Pizza at the Casa mia just off St Apostoli and if you feel like a bit of a blow out the Al vecchio Bragosso is lovely !!

Have a wonderful time ....Let me know if I can help any more..MIght see you round !
