I am just curious how many holidays people take on average when they have school age children, and when do you take them?
DD is 4 and started school in Sep so I guess we will need to stick to school holidays from now on 😏

We take 3 holidays abroad a year, usually 1 long haul at Easter or summer depending on destination, other 2 European.
2 weeks at Easter, 2-3 weeks in the summer holidays and then a week at Oct half term.
I appreciate we are very fortunate, we earn good salaries and only 1 child to pay for

I never took mine out of school, we would have a holiday in the summer then a couple of short trips in England.

DP and I are both from the same non-UK country.
We've been going 'home' for about two weeks every Christmas (staying with family) and again for a week most February half-terms (staying with family, for reasons of skiing). In addition to that, every other year we go on a 2 week proper holiday abroad, and the intervening years we go 'home' for a few weeks in the summer.

So in effect we 'travel' and 'go abroad' three times/year, but only once in two years where we are not staying with family.
We can only afford the three times/year thing because we don't need to pay for accommodation, and we only have enough leave for this because we both can work remotely, so will be working for part of the time we are away.

We usually go on two ski trips (driving to France). Two weeks in the summer which is either U.K. in our caravan or cottage in France. Then we go on another 2 or 3 uk trips in the caravan. This is all in school holidays as we have 3 children at school. We put quite a bit away for holidays rather than spend on a big house. I also take 2 weeks unpaid parental leave a year otherwise I wouldn’t have enough annual leave.

Agree that there is no such thing as normal - I don’t think the replies here are representative either of a lot of families.

I appreciate we’re lucky and we usually have 3, two of which are likely to be outside of the U.K.

We generally do one week abroad in May half term. Expensive, although generally not as pricey as July/August. Sometimes we do a ferry to France and Eurocamp, or we sometimes do a resort type place In Spain/Greece or similar if we can find a good deal. I'm quite happy with a basic self-catering so we can explore.

I then try to do a week away late-August in the UK. Somewhere like Haven, although they are bloody expensive lately. And we also do a few cheapo weekend breaks to go to attractions, usually getting a Premier Inn type deal and tickets paid by clubcard points! We don't spend a huge amount on holidays but I do like something to look forward to.

We have school age kids and usually do 5 foreign trips. Easter, may, two in summer and October.
