Malaga in January? Good idea or rather not...?

Dh has a meeting in the first week of January in Malaga and as the dc have school holidays 'til the 13th of January anyway, we thought we could turn it into a little family holiday. Do any of you know Malaga? Is it worth the trip as a family break? Where would be nice to stay? I wouldn't mind a little cottage/apartment but hotel would be OK too.

Stay in Nerja just along the coast. It's very 'nice' and gentle. Malaga itself is somewhat large and ugly. I'll have a look at the map to refresh my memory and post a couple more possible places. Paradors are hotels owned by the state, often in very grand old buildings. You could probably get a self-catering for much less tho.

nice hostal in Salobreña hostalsanjuan.com/en/Index.html
they have a self catering apartment on the top floor. Salobreña has a castle on a hill in the middle of it, the beach is about 15-20 mins walk from the hotel.

tuciudad.mforos.com/600710/3877264-salobrena/ scroll about half-way down the page for a photo of the village from the air. Its a shame about the new part but the old vilage round the castle rock is lovely

El Molino de Santillán at Macharaviaya (just outside of Malaga) is a lovely hotel.

We stayed there with our kids and they had a lovely time There is a pool but there aren't kids clubs, it isn't like that.

If you hired a car you could be at the beach in 15-20 mins, it is not far to Malaga, or Benameda where there is Tivoli and the cable cars.

Have fun!

You can't rely on the weather, soI'd stay at the parador in Malaga. You've then got all their lovely facilities plus shopping in Malaga if the weather's bad.
Salobrena is nice, but no pint being there ifthe weather's no good.

ps: my computer's not letting me create a conversation, so can I hijack this thread to ask if anyone's stayed in Spain or italy in a villa or hotel that has a full size wooden cot?
