Accomodation for 5 in Tokyo

Hi, we are a family of 5 (Dc 15, 13, 10) with flights booked to Tokyo for Easter time, we hadn't bothered booking accomodation as had presumed due to covid we would need to reschedule to the summer or even 2022.

Now the vaccine is being rolled out there is the very slim possibility it might go ahead this year, so realised we'd better start researching accomodation!

We only have 10 days, and want to see Tokyo and Kyoto, but I'm feeling overwhelmed and struggling to find reasonably priced accomodation for a family of five.

Any recommendations greatly appreciated, I know absolutely nothing about Japan, Eek!

Tokyo is very expensive but I would have a look tripadvisor to see what they recommend on hotels.

However, your biggest issue remains this one. Entry to visit Japan on a short-term basis, such as for tourism or to visit family, continues to be denied in principle for any non-Japanese nationals other than in exceptional circumstances. There is currently no indication of when this might change.

I would monitor the FCO travel website on a regular basis.

Thanks Attila, we've been watching the situation closely so know the trip is still unlikely to go ahead, but felt we should be prepared on the off chance it is possible.

I've been trawling the tripadviser boards for weeks too, but the amount of information on there is quite overwhelming, so thought I'd see if any mumsnetters had personal experience of places to stay for a family of five.

We stayed at the shangri la as it is literally on top tokyo central station. Theres lots of shops, pharmacies, plenty of food, department stores etc. I’m sure there are other hotels in the same area. We felt very overwhelmed, weren’t sure where would be right. It was actually a really good decision as it made going out very easy. A friend got an air b and b in a more residential area but said it was a pain to travel in every day.

Thanks TakeMe2Insanity, I'll take a look. I'm feeling overwhelmed too, Tokyo is just so big it's hard to know where to start, so good to have a starting point!

We went AirBnB in both Tokyo and Kyoto, in relatively big places in the end which would fit your family of 5, PM if you want details and I’ll send them to you

Q-beh, Ryokan (traditional Inn) in Gion, Kyoto was phenomenal and would house you all in the family room q-beh.com/

In Tokyo, we stayed in an Airbnb apartment, Ginza district, near Tsukiji, perfect for Metro lines.

Tokyo Hilton is amazing but wouldn't say it's a prime location. We had a standard room but got upgraded to exec suite here. My parents stayed at the Shinjuku Granbell a couple of times which they love for the location, although very small rooms which is common in Japan.

If you want cheap, we've also stayed at Remm Roppongi which was an amazing location right next to Roppongi station, but the rooms are tiny and I mean we just about fit our suitcases in! There was a massage chair in there though. It was hella cheap, less than £100 a night.

Kyoto we stayed at the Daiwa Roynet which is 5 mins walk from the train station, lovely hotel, big rooms, reasonably priced, great location (walked everywhere).

What is your plan for travel insurance? Are any insurers going to cover COVID even with a vaccine?

SnapeSnapeSeverusSnape · 14/12/2020 21:55

Thank you all, going to look into these, @IJumpedAboardAPirateShip, I will pm you, thank you!

00user00, we have annual travel insurance with our bank, we're currently covered so long as we follow FCO advice, so need to keep checking that. Thankfully the flights are fully transferable so if we can't travel this year we will just go when we can.

Rather than staying in Kyoto we stayed in Osaka and as we had rail passes took the train in to Kyoto. Hotels dont have to be expensive - I stayed in a perfectly decent business hotel for £42 a night.
