Anyone live in or know York

Dh has the opportunity for a new job there.

It would probably mean we could move out of a small flat in London/Surrey borders and buy a small house with a garden

I would have to give up work but I am assuming that even without my salary we would be able to afford a small house with a garden

I currently work 4 days a week which is partly for me but also so that we have any chance of buying a house where we live currently I am increasingly becoming fed-up with my job for various reasons and ideally would love to go back to 3 days a werek which I used to do but is no longer possible.

I suppose the cons for me are that I am worried I will be lonely and find it difficult to start again. Ds is 2.9 yrs old so the effect on him of moving schools etc is not an issue.

Ideally I would be looking for some work as well as I find being a SAHM very difficult, though ideally it would be part-time if possible.

Anyone live in htis part of the world? and if so what is it like - What is York itself like to live in? What are the schools like? What is the job market like? etc.

York is lovely but v £££!

Does a small 2/3 bedroom terrace house cost $350,000 plus? because if it is cheaper than this then it is cheaper than where we live

Local new build 2 bedroom flats are selling for $320,000
Sorry dollar sign should be GBP

My parents have just moved from York having spent the last 14 years there and they just loved it. Have a look at house prices on the net, think that you'll have a nice surprise.

It's a very busy city in the Summer with lots of tourists but there's always loads going on. Shopping is good!

Depending upon what sort of job you're looking for I know that the HQ of Ministry of Agriculture is in York and they employ a lot of part-time workers.

Can't help about schools but good luck.

I'm from York.
Its a fab place and yes it is expensive but not the same expensive as London!

The schools are good too.

What part of York would your dh be working in?

I used to be a rep and Yorkshire was part of my area. York is lovely but full of tourists. If I was going to live up there I'd buy in Wetherby or Knaresborough. Ripon even nicer imo but a longer commute.
Harrogate lovely but also touristy and vv£££££££.

this is just an example of what you could get in York in a good area
Osbaldwick

also this is a sought after location.
There is a very good infant and primary school round the corner and its great place to get to the city centre from and the shopping center on the outskirts.

Thanks for all the replies. I've been off line over the weekend so couldn't reply.

My dh is applying for a job at York university. It may not happen but he seems well qualified for the job so it is a real possibility he may get it. After reading all this I am now starting to really hope he does.

I don't know anything about the area at all (apart from a couple of school trips to York about 25 years ago !!) but the more I hear about it the better it sounds.

After checking out the links - wow what lovely big houses and all for the price of a very small house or flat in my area.

fingers crossed now and thanks for the helpful replies

Ahh well if he's at York Uni Osbaldwick is the right side for you . Its just up the road. Would take 5 mins in the car to get to work.

Fulford is a lovely place too and lovely houses. Again very near the University and good location to get to the centre from.

Good luck with it all. York is great
