Days out in Durham area

Posted this under wrong topic, trying again....
Will be up in Durham next week for a couple of days. Trying to think of something different to do with DCs (14 and 10)and fairly fit 70yr old GM.
Have already done: Hadrian's wall; Beamish; DLI;Durham itself; Hamsterly Forest; coastal walks; couple of fab hands on museums in Newcastle; Hartlepool docks; Blanchland; Stanhope; Kilhope; Bowes Museum and Barnard Castle; Raby Castle. Too old for Diggerland. Any suggestions? Happy to travel 20 - 30 miles.

That new climbing centre looks worth a visit. We usually go to the Newton Aycliffe one, but it will be nice to try another one!

lilospell · 19/10/2007 18:26

Thanks both. Will keep the climbing wall/go karting in mind if weather's bad, would prefer somethings my Mum can join in with tho! DH not going with us this time, he has to work - thinking these would be good things for him to do with DCs another time so Mum and I can go shopping! Have been to Alnwick, Bamburgh and Holy Island. (Durham's my home town, so am up there several times a year with the children, hence running out of ideas!)A couple of the country parks on the other thread are new to me tho, so will investigate. Thanks again and happy to hear of any more ideas from anyone else.

What about seven stories in Newcastle? here

fibernie · 19/10/2007 19:22

Gibside (National Trust Property) is good for walks and has the usual cafe etc.

geordiemacmummy · 19/10/2007 19:24

Sealife centre at Tynemouth?
Dalton park (shopping centre thing),
Forbidden Corner at Thirsk,
Baltic Museum/Sage music centre/Quayside market on a sunday?
Centre for Life?

ThreadyKrueger · 19/10/2007 19:39

Forbidden Corner is lovely.

We go to High Force regularly, it's lovely. Haven't been to any of the other places mentioned since I last posted, many thanks, will check them out. Anyone been to the Seven Stories place with an older child? My DD and Mum would love it, not so sure about my 14 year old DS, although he does enjoy reading.

There was an exhibition for older children but I think that has now been replaced by a roald dahl/quentin blake exhibit. It's a while since I was 14, but I think there is something for everyone at Seven Stories. It's really interesting, and there's a cafe!

Lunch in the Clooney Pub next door also a good idea.

lilospell · 20/10/2007 15:55

thanks fibernie, we'll see what the weather's like but I do like the sound of seven stories.

Aerial Extreme off the A1, between Thirsk and Masham - it's like Go Ape but also has a scaled-down version for smaller/younger children who might not be up to the high stuff.

Maybe too far for you? It's 40-50 miles from Durham I think.

WendyWeber · 20/10/2007 16:08

Oh sorry, it's 2 of the other sites that have the mini-version - this one requires min height of 1.40 (they do have an adventure playground as well though)

lilospell · 21/10/2007 21:30

Thanks Wendy, no, not too far, but don't think my Mum would be up to it and looking for something we could do together. One to think about another time if my DH is with us and wanting to take the DCs off somewhere while mum and I do more sedate stuff. We did a "feeling forest" in France a couple of years ago and we all loved it. Thanks again for the suggestion, on the "to do" list!!
