I was learning on and off (when I could afford it, basically) during my late teens, then gave up for a while when I went to uni.
After I graduated, I ended up caring for my uncle who was very unwell, and I quickly came to the conclusion that I needed to be able to drive. There wasn't really time for any messing about, so I bought an automatic car, did my theory test, booked my practical, and crammed lessons (a family member used to be an instructor) and luckily passed first time.
I did it with the thought that I needed to be able to drive NOW, but I could always go back and learn manual if it was ever an issue.
5 years on and it hasn't yet been a problem. Automatics are stupidly easy to drive. I love mine.
Of course it's always 'better' to leave your options open and learn manual if you can, but to be honest, with the way things are going towards electric vehicles, manuals are going be phased out within the next 15 years ish anyway. So it's not as important as it once was.
If it means you can get your license, instead of carrying on struggling, go for it :). The only issue is if you need to hire a car or need a courtesy car and they no autos available, but depending on your lifestyle that might literally never be a problem.
