Travelling this Christmas

DP thinking about getting away for some winter sun over Xmas as our usual arrangements are not happening this year. Given that we have two DS 3 and 6, and probably need to travel to Dubai or around to get warmer weather, I m not sure I want to risk a worst case scenario where we get stuck in a hotel room quarantining for 2 weeks because one of us get sick and we can’t travel back home.Thats not even mentioning the usual cancellation issues. I know we are a bit ahead of that now as travel restriction have lifted and probably nothing will happen, but just have a bad feeling about that one. Partner thinks I am being boring WWYD?

I can’t believe you’re even considering this to be honest.

nosswith · 21/11/2020 13:18

Neither can I. Perhaps think about visiting a country with a decent human rights record as well for when Covid 19 restrictions are lifted.

whitetilesmurf · 21/11/2020 13:47

WWID? Stay at home. Like everyone has been asked to.

Your DP is bonkers.

He can’t possibly think it a good idea, particularly to take a 6 year old away given he or she will have school.

LaurieFairyCake · 21/11/2020 14:39

Youre very likely to have to quarantine when you get back - meaning your 6 yr old will miss 2 weeks? And you both will work from home with both of them?

OverThinkingUnderDoing · 21/11/2020 14:44

I’m (hopefully) going to the Caribbean at Christmas. We’ve not been told what we can and can’t do yet so I don’t agree that we’ve been asked to stay at home.

We have to provide negative CV tests before we’re allowed to check into the hotel that need to be done within the last 5 days. That’s proving to be the major hiccup at the moment as we’re in the SW and the only place that doesn’t post the results is in London. Personally I think it’s daft that we have to trek up to London individually (we don’t want to take dc and can’t leave them on their own) but if that’s the price then I still think it’s worth it.

OverThinkingUnderDoing · 21/11/2020 14:45

Also quarantine has been reduced to one week after returning from abroad so it should work out that dc only miss a couple of days of school.

Nah, I don't visit places that imprison women for being raped.

SJaneS49 · 22/11/2020 10:11

I’ve lived in Dubai and while it’ll be comparatively warm, the expats will be in jumpers and avoiding the pool! But it is all comparative. A Dubai hotel Christmas never really did it for me to be honest, doesn’t feel very Christmassy!

Alaimo · 22/11/2020 17:41

Quarantine (when returning from abroad) has not been reduced to one week. It's still 14 days according to the Government's own website.

Forgot to mention that country we would consider do not require quarantine in either country (travel corridor)

Where in the SW are you @OverThinkingUnderDoing?

There is a CBD shop in central Bath that is about to start offering tests (Goodbody):

I thought Bath Lloyds pharmacy were doing them too?

OverThinkingUnderDoing · 24/11/2020 14:37

Ooh, that could be helpful madcats, thank you. I’m in S Devon but Bath is definitely easier to get to than London

OverThinkingUnderDoing · 24/11/2020 14:40

There is no quarantine required at all on returning from Barbados so kids won’t miss any school either.

blue25 · 24/11/2020 14:41

Ridiculous idea. Just stay at home ffs.

BlueThistles · 24/11/2020 14:49

Enjoy your Xmas trips ladies 🎄🎶🧚🏻‍♀️🧚🏻‍♀️

TimeQuest01 · 26/11/2020 16:18

@Alaimo from December 15th. If you take a test 5 days after you arrive and test negative, you’re free to stop isolating.

It’ll have to be a government approved lab.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 26/11/2020 16:33

I only have a 2 year old and wouldn't consider going away just now, too many things could go wrong.

Being stuck in a hotel room for 2 weeks with no netflix, no toys, no-one else to speak to apart from DH and DS, and possibly dodgy wifi is my idea of Hell!!!
