Travelling to Ireland for family Funeral, Problem with photo ID

My DH has to travel to Ireland tonight for a family funeral tomorrow. He has to go from the Port he didn't really want to go from but as the usual port he would have gone from is unconstruction and times havechanged to accommodate this. So he has to change, but the problem is they are asking for photo ID or he won't be able to travel. His driving license is the old style one and he has no passport. I have called them to ask their advise and all I have been told is that they are now very strict on Photo ID and if he doesn't have any then he willnot be allowed to travel.
I did say that hen we travelled to Ireland last year we were not asked for any kind of ID let a lone Photo. So now we do not know what to do. He is travelling with a few different people.
Is there any chance we can get hold of any Photo ID today? Or do you think he should chance it and see if they ask?
Any help or advise please?

TBH I think you're well and truly stuck - without a passport or driving licence there's no way they'll let him on a ferry or plane.

Could he travel via Northern Ireland, or would he need photo ID to get on that ferry too?

Sheherazadethegoat · 16/10/2007 11:13

could he go and join something that required creating a photoid. dh has traveled with his work pass and i have used a council leisure card thingy.

tigereyes1817 · 16/10/2007 11:53

He has tried his work as there is a department that needs photo id. but his doesnt and the person who see to the photo id is not available today and the others don't know how to do it.
It is to do with the port that he is travelling from, appartently all ferry port will be signing up to the same EU law that reqires Photo ID to travel its just that this particual one has joined signed up early. I didn't think of the council leisure thing. Will the produce it straight away? As I know that they will accepted his work on if he could have got it today.
I didn't realise that they were so strict with the ferry crossings. He is going to Dublin.

join costco or something like that.

I heard of someone having a similar problem with Ryanair, although BA were pretty understanding apparently.

Don't know whether a different carrier might look at it differently.

Unfortunately I don't think they will let you travel without the photo ID. I haven't travelled on the ferry to Ireland for a couple of years, but we often fly to Dublin and they are now very strict about ID.

I also do not think that he will be able to travel without government issued photo id like a passport or driving licence. Therefore I don't think a work pass is going to cut it with these officials.

He can plead his case but he is likely to be refused permission to travel.

no attila dh has flown with a work pass. photo id is just that.

According to one of the people he is travelling with they have informed DH that he will be able to travel with the rest of them. I hope he can as I know I have phoned this morning and have bee told that he will not be allowed to travel unless he has photo ID. lso been told that they are very strict on this. So I hope he doesn't have a wasted journey to the port.

Thank you for all your replies, definately next job is ensuring we have photo ID available.

To be honest I'm not too sure how strict they are on ID at ferries. We went to Ireland on the Holyhead/Dublin ferry in August and on neither leg of the journey were we asked for ID. They just wanted to see the ticket booking and number of people in the car.

Just a quick update. Dh was allowed to travel, they did tgry kicking up a stink about it but due to circumstances and DH not realising he needed photo ID for a ferry. They granted it this time. He's know on his way back with no problems.

So thank you so much for all your replies.
