Minehead - butlins things to do

My son and I are going there next week for 5 days and wanted some suggestions on things to do outside of the camp that we can drive to and see.

We like art and normally find an aquarium on every holiday

He is almost 5, i know there are caves nearby and wokey hole but was thinking about doing them on the last day so we can buy some cheese.

Thanks

Exmoor is lovelya nd if you like small places, have a wander around some of the smaller places nearby- Dunster is nice for a trip as well.

Popular places to visit are the steam railway ( next door to butlins) and also of you're heading over to Wookey consider mixing it with a trip to Wells, Glastonbury or Cheddar.

Shame you're not going just a few weeks alter as its carnival season then. Ah well!. (brisgwater carnival, 9th November- biggest illumintaed carnival in Europe or the world depending on whether you insert inght time or not (as insering removes Rio apparently LOL)) I rpesume you're going Mon- Fri otherwose taunton arnival, albeit smaller,m wopuld be a good choice (Saturday).

We're off there in a few weeks, was raised nearby and the boys deseve a bit of a treat atm.

have fun!

Oooh, you must go to Tropiquaria, just along the road from Minehead. It has loads of animals indoors and out, a puppet show, pirate ships to play on, a snake and spider handling session, and the chap that runs it (?) is hysterical, he actually managed to convince me to hold a tarantula when we went. Also an old radio museum part if you are interested in that sort of thing, and it has an aquarium.

Very reasonable entrance fees and you can spend a whole day there if you want to.

HTH

Ah yes forgot that place (as a snake phobic tend to avoid..... LOL)

Giggles, I have to admit I wasn't keen the first time, but it definitely cured the arachnophobia I used to have

dustystar · 16/10/2007 10:13

ooh yes tropiquaria is fab and i agree with valium about the chap who runs it- very funny

PeachyFleshCrawlingWithBugs · 16/10/2007 10:14

LOL_ I even panic when i see the panted sign pmsl- far toosevere a cse to get in the door

We used to like Cricket St Thomas though, (DH used to get free entry as a local if he collected token off the milk cartons, so it was a nostalgia thing for him) but I think you need summery weather for that tbh.

Use Clubcard vouchers for Wookey Hole as it is expensive to get in. Donkeys on the beach at Weston Super Mare if it is nice. Also the pier. Steam railway (also takes Tesco vouchers) right next to Butlins.

We go to Minehead a lot - mainly for walking on the coast path and Exmoor. Some of the streams are perfect for damming up and generally messing about in wellies, if you like that sort of thing.

If your DS likes aquaria, you should go here:

www.tropiquaria.co.uk/

Its got a bit of all sorts, just right for a 5 year old.Its on the A39 a bit east of Minehead.

DD enjoyed this place too:

Dunster has a castle (NT,not open every day) and a working flour mill. It also has a nice playground near the packhorse bridge which is an ideal spot for Pooh Sticks.

I wouldn't have said Wookey and Cheddar are near minehead TBH - for all the times we've been to Minehead I've only been there once - if you're coming down the M5 def do on last day on way back rather than as day trip out.

PeachyFleshCrawlingWithBugs · 16/10/2007 10:27

Ni I agree about Wookey etc- I think if you';re doing Somerset the distance is OK, iykwim, if we go off somewhere we dont know we do the whole area and dont mind a drive- but it is a definite journey. Which is why its nice to combine imo (we like Glastonbry but I used to work in Street so biased... actually Street is nice for shopping (Clarks Village)) if you do end up around that way.
