Long weekend hotel in Wales? Maybe Gower Peninsula?

Some very late halfterm planning here, ahem, but does anyone know of a really nice hotel probably in Wales near to seaside, hopefully with a pool, pleasant for small children but not full of creches etc? Or it could be somewhere else but not an absolutely enormous drive from London. Most grateful for any thoughts...

Thanks Kewcumber, will have a look through those. Have been ferreting about on laterooms and can see why DP came up with that Ramada Inn. Oh boohoohoo why are we so tragically disorganised? That looks lovely the place you didn't go, www, actually would probably have been horrid, yuck. I can feel a sad day out to Legoland coming on...

I think you need to look in South Wales, too. The roads from Carmarthen to Dolgellau are pretty rubbish. It would take you about 2 1/2 hours to do that section. You could travel up the Eastern side and across, though. What about the Abergavenny area or maybe Tenby/Kilgetty?

Fwiw, I ate in the Harbour Master some months ago and I wouldn't go there again for a meal. I felt quite uncomfortable there and didn't think much of the food.

Sorry. Numerous interruptions chez Simply. Will give up trying to post!

Krabbie, have a lovely time!

Arlo mentioned Druidstone below. I know this is a huge drive from London but I've jsut got to say how amazing this place is. You have to see past the brown gloss skirting boards and through to the wonderful food, fantastic staff and truly amazing views. Bliss.

moondog · 17/10/2007 22:34

My lovely colleague goes to the Druidstone every year with a big gang. She raves about it.
I really trust her taste so am planning a trip asap.

PeachesMcLean · 17/10/2007 22:59

The bedrooms at Druidstone are in need of decoration, but that sort of adds to the character. I've never felt so relaxed and so welcome in a hotel. And the beach is stunning. Am v jealous moondog.

Just to say, I live in North Wales and our half-term starts on the 29th October, so you're coming at a good time if your half term is next week ie. It'll be nice and quiet!

I would recommend the Empire hotel in Llandudno, though it's not cheap, it's a really nice hotel, has a swimming pool, lovely meals, parking and has recently been refurbished. I've stayed there with my 8 year old daughter just for the novelty! Failing that, then Llandudno generally as it's so nice there.

If you do go to North Wales then try and visit Bodelwydyan castle, just off the A55 on the way to Llandudno. There's loads for kids to do there, indoors as well as outdoors and you can spend the whole day there. Their website says:

"Bodelwyddan Castle is situated in Denbighshire, North Wales. Set in 260 acres of magnificent parkland, the Castle is now an outstation of the National Portrait Gallery and is open to the public most days throughout the year.As well as being a historic house and museum with a free audio tour available, the Castle also boasts large areas of formal garden and natural woodland. It is an ideal location for a family day out with something for everybody, including an adventure playground, garden maze, Victorian games room, gift shop and tea room.Have fun with the interactive exhibits in our specially created learning environment, where you can have an email photo taken dressed in Victorian costume."

It costs £12 for a family ticket and is a lovely day out, whatever the weather.

Anyway, something to think about!

Woops...Sorry krabbiepatty, see you've chosen Woolacombe Bay. That's near Bideford, North Devon where my sister lives. We're going there next year! Lovely area. Hope you have a great time! Try this place for a great day out near Bideford.Bigsheep
