AAAAAAARRRRGGGGHH! RYANAIR! How can the 'fare' be £15, and the total price end up £176?

I want to get over to Ireland to visit family for a weekend, so looked on the Ryanair website (the only airline flying to Ireland from around here).

The fare is £14.99 to go over, and 1p to fly back. How come, then, when I try to book it it comes out at over £176 for the 4 of us?

I would much sooner they put their cards on the table and said the fare was £44 each, not pretend it's £15 and then add £29 each of mysterious 'charges'. It is misleading. I know the fare is still cheap, but when they are pretending it's one third of what it really is, then that's misleading and wrong. Oh, and don't forget the baggage charge, or even the charge they levy if you don't have any baggage, and the charge for booking with a card (even though there is no other way of booking). I'll bet they're in the boardroom now, thinking up new charges. They still provide the 'no-frills service, though, just at the (eventually) same price as a proper airline.

i hate it when they do this.

Carmenere · 12/10/2007 12:08

I agree it is very annoying but 176 pounds for four including taxes is nothing and you would be very hard pushed to find a proper airline that would provide it at that price

Budababe · 12/10/2007 12:09

Hate hate hate hate hate hate Ryanair.

Budababe · 12/10/2007 12:10

Agree with Carmenere but still hate them.

Carmenere · 12/10/2007 12:12

Oh no I HATE them too but they have allowed me to visit my family at least 6 times a year since I've been in London so I just take the abuse that they deliver in the name of low-fares

GrumpyOldHearsewoman · 12/10/2007 12:15

I know it's still cheap, although by the time you get to the final checkout it's not still £176, because by then they have added on the baggage/no baggage and card charges. It goes up every time you move onto the next page. They should just quote the actual fare at the very beginning.

I bought flights for my mum and dad to go to Dublin when they did the 1p e/w fare - they went earlier this week and it was great. Definitely worth 4p!

ChippyMinton · 12/10/2007 20:36

My tip to save money: check the price to book two single fares rather than a return. Especially with Ryanair, it often works out cheaper, once you have converted the price from euro to £.

Another Ryanair hater here. You have to concentrate really hard when booking to get rid of all the expensive default options like priority boarding and travel insurance, and ensure you only take a toothbrush and one spare pair of knickers, lest you get charged a squillion quid for baggage.

But we still have to travel with them - through gritted teeth.

dolally · 12/10/2007 20:52

had dh on the phone once saying:

I'm booking online and they're charging me travel insurance....I can't get out of the travel insurance.

me: of course you can there must be a drop down menu or something.

dh: no there isn't - I can't opt out of travel insurance.

me: of course you blardy can...look properly..there must be an option

Of course, we ended up with the insurance, and when I looked at the website there is a Clevery Hidden way to opt OUT of t insurance!!

Let the buyer beware when it comes to "low cost" (and I really mean those quote marks) airlines.

MrsFlora · 04/01/2008 00:00

they are a horrible company with no ehics and not a single care in the world for their clients safety.

Did you know they make pilots work well over the legal established hours ? if they complain they lose their jobs!!

It revolts me to think they so blatantly don't give a flying monkey for their customers.

Do you think is ethical to make pay someone for the usage of of a wheelchair to get to the plane?

Boo!

discoverlife · 04/01/2008 00:11

The airlines have a policy of putting the blame where its due regards charges. In this case a lot of the charges are the taxes the GOvernment add on (environment taxes, etc)about £20 per person each way. The airlines just don't want to be blamed for high fares when its not them

Gingerbear · 04/01/2008 00:26

Thomsonfly have started charging for baggage too. Grr. Greedy, Robbing, soandsos....

RosaLuxMundi · 04/01/2008 01:16

We went to Ireland in August. Paid for three bags. Baggage allowance was clearly stated at 15kg PER BAG. In October I booked for my mum to come to us for Christmas. I paid for two bags. She had to pay excess at the airport because luggage allowance is now 15KG in TOTAL regardless of how many bags you have paid for.
I HATE Ryanair.
