We're going to Hungary fo a week early Nov.
Can anyone recommend place to stay or tell me whether children are allowed to go in the mineral baths there? Any other things I should know? Thanks if you can help.

I was in Budapest nine years ago (pre kids). We stayed in an apartment style place which would be good for anyone with kids and wasn't expensive but I can't for the life of me remember what it was called. If you fancy self catering try doing a google for serviced apartments or holiday rentals - I'm sure you'll find something interesting. I don't know about the baths - but I do remember there was a great park with outdoor pools for kids - I imagine it's too cold for them now though. Sorry not to be more help - but have a great time. Budapest is a lovely city (though I nearly got on a plane for Bucharest by mistake....)

went to Budapest 6 yrs ago in Dec and it was freezing cold - minus 11.

My top tip is make sure you've got warm clothes, hats gloves etc

Thanks for the replies. I've been sitting here switching between Google and Mumsnet. There seems to be a lot of accomodation in Budapest and much of it seems quite cheap. I'm expecting it to be cold. Will take lots of warm stuff for us and kids!!! November is also reputed to be the wettest months too, so wet weather gear is also going to come with us!!! (Something got missed in the research there hey ) Keep the suggestions coming if anyone has anything else to add!

not trying to labour the point Xoz, but at minus 11 any exposed flesh gets very cold quickly, especially if it's windy or wet - eg your face, so make sure you have scarves that can wrap around and only leave the eyes exposed.

It was a beautiful city, we did lots of exploring on foot - there's a bridge over the river to the old town. We stayed at the Intercontinental hotel right on the river

We went and had a fantastic time. I highly recommend it.
Budapest is beautiful. The trip highlight for all of us was swimming in the 34 degree thermal pool (Szechenyi baths) outdoors as it got dark and being surrounded by the steam rising from the water. It wasn't any colder ther than it has been in south UK, and it only rained part of 1 day that we were there and then we were on a bus, so it didn't bother us at all. We found accomodation which was reasonable quality and food was really cheap so it wasn't an expensive holiday, and we managed quite well to travel around independantly without knowing how to speak more than a couple of words in Hungarian as many people speak English or can understand enough to point you in the right direction.
