UK city break next week

We've had 3 holidays cancelled this year, so we're looking for a UK break next week. 2 adults, we like museums, galleries , exhibitions etc

It's difficult to find out what tourist attractions are open in the different areas.
Any suggestions, please, for a city that still has things to do?
(Not London - that's too close.)

Don't come to Liverpool! Can't believe last weekend there were full City tour buses, knowing that we had the second highest number of cases per 100,000 people in the country. Everyone knows someone newly diagnosed here, OP, so despite still things being open my advice to anyone is stay away, and wherever you choose, check the corona map first.

Bath - The Roman Baths, Sally Lunn’s house, Jane Austen museum, One Royal Crescent, the Abbey, American museum and gardens and Holburne museum are all open.

Oxford is open. Check out the Ashmolean Museum website as you would need to book in. Also, Blenheim Palace is just down the road and is always a lovely day out.

Thanks for your replies.
We had started to look at Liverpool - but maybe another year.
I used to live not far from Oxford, & although DH is quite keen I want to go somewhere new to me.
Bath looks very promising. DH has just sent me an e-mail with details of a few hotels . (I'm upstairs at the moment, he's downstairs. Sometimes we Skype.)

Bath, most things are open and the West Country is not as bad as many other areas.

SeasonallySnowyPeasant · 05/10/2020 19:00

Bath or York - probably Bath based on the CV numbers.

Funf · 07/10/2020 18:09

Liverpool is a fantastic compact city, plenty to do and going on in the centre and nothing is too far away.
As above thought I would be reluctant to go to any city at the moment.

Rumour has it that York might be heading for local lockdown soon, so probably not a good idea.
I wouldn't be going anywhere again for a bit, ugh this is all so awful.Sad

Where do you live, OP? Instead of going away, could you just do all the tourist trails near to you, as if you were a visitor? No-one ever visits all the tourist attractions of their own area, do they? You would be supporting the local economy and no worries about a hotel booking falling foul of corona.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 08/10/2020 20:11

If I really was desperate to go away, I think I'd go somehwere very quiet with a very low covid infection rate, to a nice cosy holiday cottage somewhere picturesque, with a quiet local pub for a meal or two out, and go on lots of walks and outdoorsy stuff. I'm not sure it's the time for doing indoor tourist attractions.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 08/10/2020 20:11

It does depend on where in the country you're talking about, of course.

Not sure what's open but Bristol is a city I have always really enjoyed. Great food and drinks.

midsomermurderess · 08/10/2020 21:23

Edinburgh. Even if attractions aren't open it's a lovely city to wander around. And we are having a lovely Autumn, lots of golden light in between rain showers.

JudyGemstone · 08/10/2020 21:31

Bristol - we have some lovely hotels and places to eat. Plus walking tours and outside stuff to do. SS Great Britain is a fun thing to do with kids, and they have the science museum and aquarium and zoo.

With the 16 day restriction including an advisory on public transport, I’d rule out Edinburgh. In fact we have. So disappointed.

Thanks again for the suggestions.

Stratford. Spent a lovely weekend wandering around recently, although not sure many museums/tourist attractions are open.

Most museums you have to pre book your tickets on line with a time slot to arrive. I've been to some places where entry tickets are free, but you still have to pre book online with a time slot.

Some restaurants operate in a similar way
Pre book
Timeslot

Some hotels also require pre booked timeslot for breakfast
