We are having part of our house redecorated due to roof damage. The work is scheduled for half term. I've just had a meeting with the loss adjuster and he is recommending that the insurance company pay for us to stay in a hotel. If we can find a cheap holiday package for half term (somewhere abroad) this might work out cheaper than us all staying in a hotel in London, so the loss adujuster advised me to start looking!

So, not a momemt to lose. If we go abroad it needs to be somewhere where the cost of living is low - as well as bed and breakfast, we will get around £50.00 between us (2 audlts, 2 children with large appetites) to cover all other meals/drinks.

Any suggestions? PLEASE!!

PS: That's £50.00 a day.

OOOh... Longwood holidays.... the Hyatt Regency in Taba Heights, Egypt. Half board. You get a huge buffet breakfast and evening meal, so don't need to eat at all during the day, apart from the odd ice lolly. I think it costs about £379 each for a week.

I thought of Egypt, but I doubt if the if the insurance budget will stretch to this. Any holiday has got to cost no more than putting us up in a hotel for a week in the UK. So as a ball park figure, I am assuming under £750 total? or under £500 total? I don't know for sure how much family hotels in the UK would cost.

Surely the accommodation needs to be of a similar standard to your home. Won't they give you a budget figure to work to?

tigermoth · 09/10/2007 11:51

Just found out that our local IBIS hotel willcharge us approx £1,000 for five nights bed and breakfast only (so we'd be adding £250.00 on top of that for evening meals).

Lastminutedotcom have a 7 night hotel package to majorca, including all meals and drinks for £1,100.

Hmmmmm.......

I really didn't expect this at all. I am not geared up for a holiday!

I think I could be geared up for a holiday at.. ooooh... maybe two hours notice!

tigermoth · 09/10/2007 11:55

fairyjay, you're right, we urgently need a budget figure.

AFAIK, the IBIS as the most reasonably priced hotel chain in our area, so I guess that's the minimum they can offer us. Our house is no palace, so I can't imagine them offering us a stay at the Ritz.

croatia? out of season will be really cheap. stay on a nice island.

miobombino · 09/10/2007 13:18

Would a villa be feasible ? It might then be easier to work out a food budget as you'd be living more akin to normal family life.

tigermoth · 09/10/2007 14:17

A villa and croata both sound good. If we go anywhere abroad, I want to avoid high cost hotel 'extras' and high cost tourist destination prices.

If we do end up going away towards the end of next week, we've got approx 10 days to choose the paint colours for the decorators, organise the removal of our furnitiure and choose a place to say - eek!

At least we have our passports to hand!

Hi batters, still waiting to hear if the insurance company is giving this the final go ahead.

Have lots of options going through my head, but can't do anything yet!

Do you drive? How about self catering in France www.gites-de-france.com or similar

In case anyone is wondering what happened, we have decided to go in February half term instead, and have put off the decorating work till then.

We are planning on going to Egypt so I will be looking up Egypt threads here very soon for advice.

Yes exactly, batters. We all really want to go to Egypt and having a week of sun in February will be such a boost. Ds2 is really keen on this bit of history, too (makes a change from army things).

And we won the Santa in Lapland competition (thrilled to bits about this!!!), so ds2 will be going from one temperature extreme to the other!
