How was it? We are considering a couple of nights away during October but I am not sure how the experience will be. I assume no use of spa or swimming pools etc. I’d rather not do air B and B.

Just booked one. Pool is open but you have to book a slot and turn up already changed. Cafe areas open but prebooked slots for meal times. No sauna.

The biggest problem was finding space as a lot have minimum stays and reduced capacity.

Stayed at the Hilton on theTyne in Gateshead (just at the end of the swing bridge) last weekend and it was brilliant.

My SIL researched and chose this one because of all the reviews mentioning cleanliness.

The Covid measures were clear and 100% observed. Masks (visitors and staff) in all common areas, hand sanitiser everywhere. The furniture in the entrance / bar area was all spread out in groups and all felt squeaky clean.

The bedrooms each had a seal across the door that you broke to go in and everything had been wiped and labelled as such inside.

All that, with views of the Tyne bridge and Newcaatle city scape for £68 a night. We thought it was genuinely great and felt so safe and therefore relaxed.

We stayed in Edinburgh last week and all was good. Area's regularly cleaned. Designated doors for entry and exit. Social distancing was good. Hand Gel stations throughout the Hotel inc the lifts. We felt safe.

Thank you. It’s actually Edinburgh we are considering.

I stayed in Edinburgh last week it was fine, hotel very clean, well organised and very cheap. Any other Edinburgh questions just shout out

tinytemper66 · 13/09/2020 17:19

Yes...Clayton Chiswick London...very clean and very safe.

Cakestandkitchen · 13/09/2020 21:57

Thanks. I’m not going to book until closer to the time, just in case.

I was born in Edinburgh but quite fancy doing the touristy things for a couple of days.

I've been recently to a few different hotels

Some hotels insist on masks inside in public parts of hotel

Some you must pre book a time slot for breakfast or other meals. Saw people being turned away for breakfast if no timeslot booked

None of the rooms have been serviced whilst staying eg Didn't make beds, empty bins

I've been away for a night in Scotland and a couple of nights in Northumberland recently. Both were a lovely experience.

There was a pool, gym and jacuzzi at the Northumberland hotel - Matfen Hall, which I'd highly recommend. It was a bit of a faff having to book the pool in advance, then you had to come down to the pool in your costume wearing your robe, and have your shower in your room afterwards. We didn't get to use the jacuzzi as only one party was allowed to use it.

The only thing I'd say as an Edinburgh dweller is that our daily numbers are rising and I suspect there may be a local lockdown soon, but having said that it just seems to mean no indoor meeting with other families, so may not impact on a trip. Currently most restaurants and attractions are open, you just - like most other places these days - need to book in advance and fill in your details.

Cakestandkitchen · 14/09/2020 12:04

Thanks Rookie. Thee seems to be plenty of availability hotel wise just now but I don’t plan on booking until a day or two before. As you say numbers are rising all the time and given the battle we’ve had to get our Europe trip refunded! I’d rather wait.

As a side note, where is decent to eat in Edinburgh these days? Good restaurants with steak etc? We ate in Kyloe last time we were down and didn’t rate it.

Kyloes can be a bit hit or miss, not ideal at the price. There is a nice South American steak house called Ranchos on Morrison St, it's not fancy but I do like their steaks.

Just been to The Bonham to use up a Chateaubriand meal for two and that was excellent, but I think they are closed for refurbishment from October.

Fazenda is a rodizo type place where they bring the food over, it's a fun experience and meat quality is good. Six by Nico is meant to be excellent but you need to book months in advance.
