Do you think we'll be able to go to New York in April next year?

I know it's a ridiculous question as no-one knows what's going to happen. But I'm just after opinions.

My mum, sister and I were supposed to go to NY in April of this year for my mum's birthday. Obviously we couldn't go and got our money back. As I work in a school I'm limited to when I can go and we are now looking at April of next year.

I used to travel quite extensively but 5 years ago we got a rescue dog who cannot be left with anyone else and I haven't been abroad since. Whilst I absolutely love the dog to bits and do not regret getting him. I was really looking forward to getting away. (Made possible by the fact that my husband would be at home with him).

I was chatting with my sister earlier and she casually mentioned that her friend who works for a multi-national company have stopped all travel to the states for the whole of 2021, so she thinks it will probably be 2022 when we go. Do you think this really will be the case?

From the UK? Nobody knows..

Almost all the projections I'm hearing about for timescale for return of significant transatlantic holiday traffic are getting more and more pessimistic.

I can only wish you good luck.

Sorry to say, but I doubt it 😕

chipsandpeas · 13/08/2020 14:12

who knows
i had a trip planned for this year that included new york that got cancelled and im planning it for next year in june but not booking anything that cant be cancelled until the last minute

Many companies are looking at cost cutting thanks to the recession and business travel is an obvious area of cost saving. Having worked successfully (mostly) by zoom throughout lockdown, I know my DH’s organisation will be dramatically cutting any business travel. Your sisters organisation may be doing something similar. I can only echo everyone else and say fingers crossed but who knows at this point. We had looked at booking California for summer 2021 but decided against it but the reality is all might be fine. Or not! Hope you do get to go though obviously.

KoalasandRabbit · 15/08/2020 01:46

I don't think anyone knows at this stage, depends on whether a vaccine is made that works permanently.

I'm not booking anything outside of UK until things are clearer but I would have thought at a certain point economically things will have to reopen. However, the US would be one of the last places I would go if covid is still around due to cost of healthcare there and high rates of covid.

If it were me I would look at somewhere in the UK that's refundable and maybe somewhere you can take the dog too, possibly even the husband Grin. Or wait and book later if situation improves. But I do understand desire to go abroad and depends on your risk as well though for me it's the chaos that goes with covid that worries me more than covid, the lockdowns, quarantines, losing money, bankruptcy, being refused flights as a temp etc.

I can’t wait to get back to the States, I need my Bath and Bodyworks fix!

TalkingOutOfMyBottom · 15/08/2020 02:18

I wouldn't put money on it.

flatulencebythebucket · 15/08/2020 02:49

No & you're mad to want to go.

Aquamarine1029 · 15/08/2020 02:58

Honestly, who fucking knows. Any optimism I had went down the drain weeks and weeks ago. My husband and I have personally decided not to make any travel plans abroad until well into next year. For us, it's just not worth the worry.

Purpleartichoke · 15/08/2020 03:02

I think the odds of you getting to holiday in NYC April 2021 are lower than dolphins suddenly starting to speak in English.

ARoseInHarlem · 15/08/2020 03:03

No. And you certainly wouldn’t want to get sick there either.

Bananabread8 · 15/08/2020 03:10

I can understand you want to go away OP. Nothing wrong with that. I don’t think any long haul flights will be going ahead early next year. Hopefully by 2022 there’s a lot more clarity about the virus..

Annist · 15/08/2020 05:13

The flights are happening. I'm in NYC now but we are dual citizens. The question is will your flight go and will they let Brits in. No one knows but my guess is it will go ahead. Absolutely everyone here is wearing a mask and making a good faith effort at abiding by the rules.

notimagain · 15/08/2020 06:21

@Bananabread8

I don’t think any long haul flights will be going ahead early next year.

As Annist says a limited number long haul flights are happening now, including between the UK and New York, many are freight only but a very limited number are carrying passengers..

The problem is to gain entry to the States you have to be in one of the allowed categories/have the required permissions/have the required Visas to enter the States..a plain vanilla ESTA, as used by most holidaymakers won't work ATM or for the forseeable future.

Bananabread8 · 15/08/2020 06:29

Companies like TUI/First choice are still taking bookings. I have Mexico booked for December. A friend of mine flew from Nigeria to UK a couple of weeks ago.
I’m sure my booking will be cancelled.

zafferana · 16/08/2020 11:08

Well obviously no one knows OP, but I do think that as time goes on we will all learn to live with this virus and remember that the USA has an election looming in early November, which could change things a bit. I do think too that economies will need to look at ways to reopen safely and I think that testing will become much more common-place with regard to travel. At the moment, non-US citizens and permanent residents from the UK cannot enter the country and those who are allowed have to quarantine for 14 days. If you can re-book for April and then move your booking again if travel still isn't possible then what do you have to lose?

notimagain · 16/08/2020 12:47

At the moment, non-US citizens and permanent residents from the UK cannot enter the country and those who are allowed have to quarantine for 14 days.

Some may have noticed by now that blanket statements such as that are one of my pets peeves...

The reality is the US entry rules contain exceptions to both to the entry restrictions and to the quarantine requirements for individuals (including non US citizens) in certain lines of work/occupations who hold certain Visas/have certain permissions...

However there is no sign of the ESTA scheme which allows the likes of holiday travel into the States being resumed any time soon.

BritWifeinUSA · 18/08/2020 05:42

We have booked to go to Europe in May so I certainly hope so.

pollylocketpickedapocket · 18/08/2020 05:48

Would you want to go? From what I've read nyc is changing fast and will never be the same for a long, long time. Hope it's false rumours as I love the place and had intended to go this October.
Think about, and research carefully this before worrying about a vaccine or whether you'll be allowed in
