Beach near venice

Looking at a few days away at the end of the month. Have 2,4&8 year old who would love a beach. Any nice sand beach towns within an hour or 2 of Venice? Also recommendations for things to do in Venice for 1st and last day of the trip? I quite fancy the little island with the colourful houses, is it worth spending a few hours there?

We’ve done Spain/Greece 7 days AI previously so this is a new kind of holiday for us and I’m lost!

Lido di jesolo!

Sogoodfeelssobad · 02/08/2020 11:12

Yep - definitely Lido Di Jesolo!! Beautiful beaches and a lovely, welcoming child friendly town!

Icklepickle101 · 02/08/2020 11:14

Thank you I’ll have a look!
Is it hideously expensive? That seems to be the case with most of Venice and as we our still waiting for our previous holiday refund the budget isn’t huge!

Yes- that whole Riviera is geared up for families and beach hols. Lots of offers this month too.
Good to pay for a private beach, you get umbrella, loungers, showers and loos.

No, that area isn't nearly as expensive as Venice which is IMO a rip off. You can do Venice itself in a day. Just wander around, everything is open. Venetians have been moaning about their livelihood due to not as many tourists as usual but those of us in the rest of Italy are of the opinion they can therefore stop charging you £6 for a coffee then to attract the punters!

Murano? The island? Much of Venice itself has the Murano stuff, I wouldn't go for a special trip out there tbh.

Verona isn't far from Venice and is lovely.

There is an area in Venice called Lido that has a beach, I’ve not been but friends have and it is supposed to be nice.

I have however been to Lido Di Jesolo. We go to Italy a lot and this flat Mussolini built sand spit which is basically just hotel after hotel after hotel (a lot of them from the 40/50/60’s) and a beach wasn’t really my idea of a good time at all. To be fair, we were staying in one of the older and grottier hotels but there are much much nicer places in Italy. Getting into Venice as well was a pain - it’s a bus then boat ride.

The Amalfi coastline is absolutely gorgeous. It is pricey though. Alternatively, Sanremo is attractive (cheap flights into Nice). If you are set on Venice, I’d look at Lido (but apologies to the PP definitely not di Jesolo!).

Agree with @ScorpioSphinxInACalicoDress - Verona is great. You can easily get a bus from there to the Lakes or a train to Venice.

Burano has little brightly coloured houses and is well worth a visit. Lovely ride on the ferry and plenty of little shops and cafes. I loved it and agree with pp you can find Murano glass anywhere in Venice and the island not as pretty as Burano. Sorry can't help with the beach though...

We've stayed on the Venice Lido at Villa Edera and there's a beach there and its in Venice. I love visiting Murano, Burano and Torcello and would recommend. I love Venice itself though not been in July / August, think its normally recommended to do other times but maybe different this year.

Also stayed south on Isola Arabella www.albarella.it/isola-di-albarella.html. Preferred staying in venice but we got a very cheap deal on this one year via Booking.com first few days of September, did need to hire car though and restaurants were pricey there. It was a bit like an Italian centreparcs there.

I'ld only book fully refundable things at the moment though.

We stayed in Venice last year and did a day trip to Burano, Murano and Torcello in one, which was a lovely way to see them all. Also did a trip out to Lido which was a welcome change from Venice itself, being a little more open and airy, and has a great beach, ideal for little ones. We did it all in an Air BnB a short ride away from all the main stops, which worked out pretty good value.

From lido de Jesolo you can get a boat into venice. Have a look at staying at accommodation in a campground as well. Some of them have direct access to the best beaches and have pools and other facilities for kids.

HannibalHayes · 02/08/2020 22:32

The Lido in Venice has a gorgeous beach, and is on the vaporetto routes around Venice so you can do beach and city in one go.

I'm guessing it might be more expensive than some of the others, but I think if you stay on Lido rather than the main islands it's a bit cheaper.

SJaneS48 · 03/08/2020 06:18

Reading through all this, as both places referred to are Lido’s, to not confuse you PP, here’s some info. Both have beaches.

Venetian Lido - www.italyheaven.co.uk/veneto/venice/lido.html

Lido di Jesolo - www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Tourism-g11962484-Lido_di_Jesolo_Jesolo_Veneto-Vacations.html

happystory · 03/08/2020 08:06

I can attest it's confusing having turned up at the wrong Lido when I was a student!

massistar · 16/08/2020 10:36

Caorle is lovely. It's a bit further down the coast from Jesolo and a lot nicer. It's a beautiful old town with lots of little streets and nice restaurants.

stovetopespresso · 08/10/2020 23:23

yes stay on the mainland so you can get the vaporetto to Venice every day if you want. a
stay right on the beach, easy, and much more "italian" than Venice on its own
