Anyone else now going to France?

Just wanting a quick poll on what people's thoughts are about going to France with current lockdown relaxations? - Euro tunnel, caravan 2 x hotel stop offs en route with 2 DC's .....All facilities on sites open apparently but gel, masks etc needed. Wondering will it be empty? Hard work and weird to follow rules? What would you do? x

Bezzi I live in France, what is the pasta sauce maybe I can send you some?

dingit · 30/07/2020 17:27

I need to know the pasta sauce too Smile

chocolatviennois · 30/07/2020 17:30

@Bezzi There are Still plenty of ferry options to France. I think Brittany ferries aren’t running one of their routes but you could still go to Caen for eg. We have booked a few Accor hotels and they seem to be open as usual. One can’t be sure that there won’t be further travel restrictions but we are still hoping to go.

Bezzi · 30/07/2020 17:44

@paintedwolf ahh bless you, that's so kind!! Made my heart happy that.
Don't worry, I'll survive. I actually have a friend who lives in France so that's a really good idea, I could ask her to bring me some when she drives back at Christmas!
@dingit I've attached an image. You used to be able to get it in UK then it gradually got rarer until it completely disappeared. Imagine my delight when I discovered it in French supermarkets!

@chocolatviennois it's the whole uncertainty that's been driving me crazy. Thanks for your suggestions but I've cancelled the rest of the accommodations now and I actually feel better for making a decision.

Told DC before and they are absolutely fine. One has asked to sleep in the lounge on the sofa bed instead. If I'd known he'd be happy holidaying in the lounge I wouldn't have booked the bloody thing in the first place! 😂

Anyone else now going to France?

I probably would have done same as you @Bezzi if it was a case of getting money back today. Glad your kids aren't too upset. Ours will go mental, hey ho! Just hanging on for now as can get Airbnb refund. But the constant monitoring isn't fun.

Bezzi · 30/07/2020 17:58

I hope everything calms down and everyone who's hanging on gets to go 🤞🏼
If ever there was a year when a holiday was needed!!

Who ever gets there have a glass of wine and pasta sauce for me!

paintedwolf · 30/07/2020 18:11

So glad you have a supplier lined up Bezzi! I am now going to have to try this sauce. If its any consolation to those that have cancelled their trips to France we were meant to be leaving for the UK today to visit relatives, go to the pub, eat fish and chips etc. All now postponed until next year.

300XLTriColour · 30/07/2020 18:16

Just read this thread, as I’ve spent all afternoon looking at holidays in the UK and France and debating about what to do - still no clearer! But if someone could link to the coloured map of French regions please I would be very grateful, I’m not sure I am looking at an up to date one when I search on google.

WeakandWobbly · 30/07/2020 18:25

@fartyface we're going next Friday as well. We go every year. Overnight ferry then drive to the Dordogne. Chalet camping for 2 weeks. Will keep pitstops to a minimum, as the motorway services are always so crowded! My plan is to carry loads of food /sandwiches for the journey. HmmKeeping our fingers crossed too!

Bandol · 30/07/2020 22:07

@Bezzi I get that sauce for my DM in the UK!
My parents are due to drive over from the UK to stay with us at home in France in August. I'm hoping that their trip won't be cancelled because I need my UK groceries bringing over GrinWink (would also very much like to see them and for them to have to have a relaxing break and change of scenery)

Castoreum · 30/07/2020 23:14

I like Zapetti pasta sauce in tins.

We're supposed to be going to France in a week, driving pretty much all the way down to stay in a family-owned house. I don't know what to do. We won't be at high risk while there - click and collect shopping and just sitting by the pool reading is about as exciting as it will get. I'm just worried about potential quarantine/lockdown.

Fairybio · 31/07/2020 09:48

Downing Street press conference at noon. Obviously they will talk about the northern mini-lockdown, but I'm wondering if foreign travel will come up too. I have a son on holiday in Germany at the moment...

smogsville · 31/07/2020 10:35

Thanks for the heads up on that @Fairybio I'll be listening. Like you I heard MH on Today yesterday sounding ominous about other countries they're watching.

Not quite what you asked for but may be helpful. The grey box - top left of the map - will change the type of data. You can click on any of the numbers in the circles to see more details.

With this one you can click on the individual departments to see more data on the left.

300XLTriColour · 31/07/2020 15:02

@doyounothavegoogle thank you!

Maladicta · 31/07/2020 15:09

We’re in the Pas de Calais now, everyone being sensible in shops and quite a few towns are introducing mask bylaws for busy streets and outdoor markets. Noticeably fewer Brits than usual.

doyounothavegoogle · 31/07/2020 17:18

It has been announced today that local prefectures can make their own decisions about making mask wearing compulsory outside. Children under 11 are exempt.

Rocamadour have already done this between 10am and 7pm - it is a very popular tourist destination, and I understand that it is going to apply to some areas of Lille too. Worth keeping an eye on further developments if you are planning to travel to France.

It's pushing 40 degrees in the shade at the moment here in the south-west so it will certainly be a challenge!

smogsville · 31/07/2020 17:44

Good luck with those temperatures @doyounothavegoogle (loving your name btw!) and thanks for the updates. The bit we're aiming to go to (Morgat, Finistere) already has the mask thing in force. But we are keeping beady eyes on all the alerts. I'm having a large negroni now and I must say it is helping enormously. I should have started with one at 9am on Monday and it would have been a considerably less stressful week.

Coffeecak3 · 31/07/2020 17:46

I live in France and took my dgs to Disneyland Paris yesterday. It's running at low capacity so really quiet and quicker queue times.
No parades, fireworks or hugging characters. Sanitizer at every attraction.
He had an amazing time.

1stMrsF · 31/07/2020 17:56

We are travelling on Sunday to Pas-de-Calais. Self catering (and we've ordered Carrefour shopping delivered! My main worry is if masks become compulsory on the beach, as this is what the children have been looking forward to, but it isn't anywhere near as busy there usually as the beaches that have been named by the BBC today.

How do you find out what the colour status of the department is please?

fartyface · 31/07/2020 20:00

I can't imagine wearing masks to sunbathe or on the beach!

meowcatmeow · 31/07/2020 21:42

We cancelled our Vendee holiday today. With another 1350 cases (3 days on the trot) we cannot risk local lockdown or quarantine.
I've swapped tunnel tickets for October so hopefully that will go ahead.

LaChatte · 01/08/2020 08:43

Just in case anyone was wondering, where masks are compulsory, face visors are not sufficient, you must have a mask covering your nose and mouth in order to protect others (and not get fined while you're at it).

Maladicta · 01/08/2020 09:34

@1stMrsF From what we’ve seen, no plans to do that on beaches - they’re so big on the Côte d’Opale you can always find plenty of space! Check the FB page for where you want to visit and them for any time walking round town. Forecast for the next few days is low 20s so not too hot anyway. Enjoy!

1stMrsF · 01/08/2020 10:09

Thanks @Maladicta I hadn't thought of a Facebook page for info. Found the page for the Mairie and now know exactly what's expected (masks advised in the streets in town, compulsory in shops and in the market but not required on the beach or the promenade.) Off to pack...
