what can we do? he threw up yesterday on a 15 minute car journey (although there was a lot of birthday cake & general craziness beforehand). any tablets that actually work? we have a ferry journey at half term which i am somewhat dreading.... tia.

My kids haven't had a problem when they've had Joyrides.

Try Sealegs. My DS suffers terribly - sick stomach, headaches. You can get those wrist band things as well. Not sure how well they work. My mother always swore by boiled sweets to settle a tummy.

We all took Sturgeron before an overnight ferry crossing in the summer. All ok, that said it wasn't a particularly rough crossing. If he needs a snack en route, ginger biscuits are supposed to be good as are barley sugar sweets if he's old enough for boiled sweets.

I know how dreadful this can be, 28 yrs old and still car sick. The wrist bands are good they may be worth a try.

Some little things to think about.. fresh air in the car, i hate being hot to the extent that i'll let myself get really cold. I have to look forward, i cannot look out of the side window, or behind. I know this is hard with car seats being behind the front passengers, but perhaps if you put him behind the passenger and remove the head rest?

And its always best not to eat too much crap before hand, or a lot of fluid - i can feel it in my stomach in a car and its makes me gag before we've moved off!

I hope your DS grows out of it (like the majority do!)

agree with all tips so far

My sister and I were carsick at the drop of a hat and we regularly turned up at Grandma's in our vests, having been sick on all our other clothes.
Eventually my parents gave up and we went on holiday by train...

.

i am not at all surprised ds is carsick as i used to be too. and it has come back since having the children .

will try joyrides & sturgeron. he knows about sitting up straight & looking out the window which is usually open. he has water too. i think sweets would probably be the most popular option!

Boots do good own brand travel sickness pills too.

The other thing that can really work is to listen to a walkman/i-pod etc. with headphones on. The sickness thing stems from the balance part of the middle ear so it sort of makes sense. It works brilliantly for my daughter, just have to buy lots of audio books now.

Phenergen the night before and a top up in the morning is the only thing that works for DD.

clandestine · 04/10/2007 16:21

A DVD player in the car made a huge difference to my DD. It encourages them not to look out the window

That combined with wrist bands have almost seen off hte problem - aeroplanes are still a nightmare though

Have you tried homeopathy? Cocculus works wonders on our son who suffers from travel sickness (they are tiny pills that go under the tongue) - also was told tabaccum(sp?) might work.

arfur · 08/10/2007 14:58

the wristbands work well for my dd but something that might be worth a try (and I know that it sounds nuts) but I had to help out this year on dd's school trip which was an hour coach ride and there were about 10 kids on the coach whose parents had notified the school about being travel sick. Anyway one of the other helpers was a rather elderly school governor who turned up with a stack of newspapers and asked each child who felt sick to sit on one, well I have to say I sniggered but not one child was sick on both journeys, physcological maybe? PS my dd was one of them!
