How do the French feel about English tourists?

We’ve got a holiday booked for the end of July in south west France and are undecided whether to go.

Currently there’s a 2 week voluntary quarantine period for people arriving in France from UK. I’ve read online that that’s likely to be no longer required shortly as we no longer require people coming to uk from France to quarantine.

How do the French feel about the English tourists coming and not doing the voluntary quarantine?

We’re driving there via eurotunnel and staying at a campsite.

Would you still go? DH is keen as we’d spend most of our time at the beach and not do any touristy stuff so doesn’t think the risk is any higher than being here.

No idea but we are going to Cornwall. (Booked before Covid) and I quite expect to be put in stocks and pelted with rancid tomatoes.

I don't think there is a quarantine any longer. I would go.

We did think about changing our plans and going to Cornwall instead but thought the same Grin

I know ours quarantine rules changed from 10th July but I didn’t see anything confirming the rules for France.

We’re still going but I’m nervous about it!

The voluntary quarantine was only for as long as the UK insisted on a 14 day quarantine.

Everything is getting back to normal in SW France although you are still required to wear a mask in some places. The main difference is that a lot of the usual summer events, such as night markets, are cancelled. Daytime food markets are business as usual. Bars and restaurants are open but with social distancing (it's 1m here in France)

There are already a lot of tourists here - from all over, not just UK - and they appear to be very welcome.

Whereabouts are you planning to go?

We are going to France. Booked yesterday, can't wait

Thanks for the info. I don’t mind wearing a mask where required. Is a cloth one ok or do we need the blue/green medical ones?

It’s a shame the night markets are shut but we will be avoiding crowds as much as we can this year anyway.

We’re staying near Messanges. DH and the kids are into surfing so it’s perfect for them! I’ve got an old knee injury so not much surfing for me but I love sitting on the beach people watching .

How are you getting there? We’re going via the tunnel and the prices have gone up loads this year.

@ASchuylerSister

Looks lovely, that's a fair way from us, but a lovely part of the country.

Cloth masks are fine - you will see everything from the disposable ones (readily available in supermarkets and pharmacies) to the full-face plastic visors and everything in between.

Hand gel is also supplied in most places - we were at a vide grenier yesterday and almost every stall had some for customers to use.

Most of the supermarkets have spray and disposable paper towels to clean the trolley handles. No queues or obvious shortages.

Enjoy your people watching! Bring lots of sun cream - it's hot, very, very hot at the moment.

ASchuylerSister · 13/07/2020 17:30

@doyounothavegoogle That all sounds very well organised. Our local Tesco has removed the one way system and distancing signage so it’s a nightmare in there.

Will bring a lot of sun cream!

There are 1m floor markings at the checkouts and the cashiers have screens and masks. I have seen some one-way systems marked out but they don't seem to be rigidly enforced - maybe that is because none of the supermarkets round here (even the big hypermarkets) are particularly busy! When we were under the strict lockdown rules then people were asked to shop alone, but that isn't an issue any more.

They will be very welcoming as they want your money.

fartyface · 13/07/2020 23:23

Yes it was rather pricey. We paid up for refundable just in case. Thing is, when we've all been stuck in for so long it basically seems worth it at a little more.

I don't imagine we will regret it (unless that low risk catches us out in which case no doubt we will regret it) :)
