parking near the Portland hospital

mckenzie · 27/09/2007 16:21

DD is having a small operation at the Portland on saturday.
Does anyone know which car park near there is a good one to use please? (Good meaning not too expensive, close by, secure etc if possible) We'll probably need it from about 12.30pm until about 7pm.

TIA

there's some street parking around there too

NorksDrift · 27/09/2007 16:41

I think the pay and display/meter parking is 4 hrs max though.

foxinsocks · 27/09/2007 16:53

yes, I think the bays near it are 4 hour ones. If you come off the marylebone fly over and go left rather than right (in that bit before regent's park), there's a whole section of parking there that's free on a Saturday (as I think residents are only Mon to Friday there so that means you can park on the yellow lines there too) if you wanted to get someone to drop you off and then park iyswim.

But if you want to do that, say so and I'll just check that parking zone still applies there.

hifi · 27/09/2007 17:04

you could try parking across the road at the side of regents park, i dont think you have to pay, you only pay up to 18.30 any way on a meter.

hifi · 27/09/2007 17:18

think all the meters a pay by phone now fyi

Or Cavendish Square, near Great Portland St and John lewis. Sorry haven't time to do a link, but google it and I think it's run by a group offering a discount for advanced booking. Would be 10 mins walk or so to the Portland.

mckenzie · 27/09/2007 21:11

thanks you all so much for the replies.
If you have time to check foxinsocks, that would be grand and I'll check out the ones that others have mentioned too.
DH is coming too so he can always drop us at the hospital and go back and park if necessary.

is it this Saturday?

hope it all goes ok

I've linked into the Westminster council website. It's a great website for parking info (will tell you how much the car parks cost too if you want to look at that).

If it works (my link), you'll see a map. Great Portland Street is just to the right of it - the parking zone to the north of Marylebone Rd (where Baker St and the planetarium are) is a Mon to Fri zone. The parking zone to the south (where Gt Portland St is located) is Mon to Sat (you click on the zone and it tells you what it is - I've clicked on the top zone).

There are lots of car parks round there too (and they are well signposted) so if he finds getting parking there a hassle, it shouldn't be too hard to find a space.

city of westminster parking zones

aarggh link didn't quite work

if you click on 'view parking zones at a different location'

then put in marylebone road, it will bring it up

you can see Gt Portland St to the south of it and baker street etc. to the north in a diff zone

foxinsocks - you are a star! thank you so much.
It is this saturday and the hospital have just called to ask if they can move the time forward (It was 3pm, now 12 noon). For once in my life I will be hoping that DD wakes early otherwise she won't be able to have anything but water all morning

hope she is safe and sound at home now mckenzie!

mckenzie · 29/09/2007 20:42

hi foxinsocks - thank you for thinking of us

It all went smoothly and we got home about 4.30pm. We would have been allowed out a tad earlier but had to wait for DD to do a wee.
The hosptial staff were lovely, we found it all no problem and apart from coming round cranky and then crying to go straight home, DD was a star. Fast asleep now, hopefully for at least 12 hours. Dh and I feel quite shattered.

oh yes I'm sure - you need a big glass of wine or a bar of chocolate. It's very stressful this operation lark!

Hope you all get a good night's rest!
